The Only Solace



So small
she was so small
laying there
as the surreal moment forced the unanswered questions
of why?
How? How could this have happened to such a beautiful child?
How can you say goodbye to such innocence?

Her black pigtails
laid softly on each shoulder
offered a stark contrast to the white dress her mother had struggled to choose
she had this look
as if she were at peace
innocent
and smiling
perfectly still
as if all she were doing was napping

For a brief moment
as the gentle morning sun began to flood the chapel
it seemed as if angels had come to lift her soul
and take her away
this was the only solace
a grieving mother and father could have
so small
so very small
she was so very small
laying there surrounded by still noise
and whispered tears
she had this look
as if she were at peace
something her parents will never have

So sadly beautiful.
