Flood: Deaths Cold Embrace
Bitter winds blow damp and cold Howling, on disasters lonely night Water rising, deep and black Come to claim treasures most cherished Hope fades, as darkness falls cold and black No sign of rescue near Many welcomed to it's cold wet caress Deaths wanton river seeks more Gone now are the relics and spoils of mans past His memories, cherished, displayed Gone are the dreams The fruits of his toil Earned under sweating brow Gone is the laughter that once filled the air Replaced by the savage cold silence And gone are the plans of days yet ahead Lost, to disasters hungry river Soon day will dawn to a landscape changed Altered by natures great fury Lost in his fear man will cry to be heard With only the silence his answer Darkly she lingers to offer caress Inviting still, the injured and the weak In days to come, more yet will seek peace In the arms of deaths wanton river |

This sounds and feels like a very sad journey that I wouldn't be too eager to take... like all the best of the past is gone, and there is no future, nothing good to look forward too... just my take...

This sounds and feels like a very sad journey that I wouldn't be too eager to take... like all the best of the past is gone, and there is no future, nothing good to look forward too... just my take... Reality is not always a rose on every bush, but there is always thorns. I wrote this originally after Katrina. I had friends who suffered from Ivan and Katrina. Luckily they only lost their homes and belongings. |

Yes, I remember her, she affected my property too, good thing FEMA helped put things back together for those of us who suffered loss under her wrath. So, I wasn't too far off on the sad journey, only that I was involved in it myself too. lol... oops, guess this rose with thorns was on that bush too... lol.. what a coincidence... |

FEMA helped?..... now that's another story... not a very good one either I'm afraid. In many if not most cases they were more of a hindrance than a help. Many I know personally are still under attack after all this time by FEMA for goods and services they never received. Now their properties and tax returns are being threatened.... of course with no recourse because they represent our wonderful governments involvement. |

Yes, I can totally relate to any government problems your friends are having... seems like it doesn't matter which branch "we the people" need to do their jobs on our behalf, we always get the shaft... We were lucky here in Choctaw County tho, the FEMA rep came out and documented the damage and paid for the entire loss... anyway.. once I knew what your poem was actually about, I reread it and could see how you covered the storm and effects right on track... and it actually brought me back to that time and the feelings of anxiety and fear... and of course the aftermath... what a shameful disaster... the loss of life... everybody I know down in that area suffered loss, and was uprooted to Texas... and they're just now getting back some semblance of normalcy in their lives... so, your work is much appreciated on their behalf... the thoughts, they do count... |

N.O. was a place I spent a lot of time in before katrina, and immediately after-words I went there to for four months to help out. (on my dime, I might add) it was one of the worst experiences of my life. that mess didn't just change the landscape, it changed everything! the corruption, the waste and the mismanaged recovery efforts left a very bitter stain on what was once the most unique city in this country. I have not been back since and i'm not sure I ever will. |
