No, it shouldn't be required. It teaches nothing but blind adherence to custom and delivers no value to the words through practice. As a child I spent a lot of time in the principal's office watching TV instead of in class because I refused to recite it. You too!?  Even barred fro 2wks...I loved it as I hated public schools in Wash. DC Forced allegiances is like fascism, be it left or right; it is mind manipulation and control by the State and by parents and a society totally brainwashed. Had a few old southern relatives that carried the tradition to never pledge or swear any allegiance to any flag but the old Stars and Bars of the Confederacy and went so far as to refuse enlistment in the US armed forces; same with my German relatives that refused to support or join the Nazis but some did join the armed forces until the required oath to Hitler himself. State enforced 'patriotism' coercion of the minds of its citizens is a violation every law of freedom and of their human rights. |

Patriotism is a virtue of the vicious. Oscar Wilde I don't understand pride in ones country. Am I supposed to believe this is the best place on Earth simply because this is where I fell from the womb? I say let the young ones grow up and decide for themselves if they want to pledge or not. |
