My co worker has Asperger's. He is very high functioning and works in our IT DEPT.
I recognized his autism right away when we met and we became instant friends!

Im no expert on Autism but what Ive learned...Ive learned from my co worker.
He is very focused when he is trying to make a point. He enjoys fact based or historical books.
Now, knowing these things about him makes for a pleasant conversation and he is a great guy!

However, others treat him poorly and label him " super nerd" or "disgruntled employee soon to be"
This pisses me off! I know he has Asperger's but they don't! He told me not to mention it.

As adults in the workplace, they should know better than to treat him like this!
What's offending me more is that they are so ignorant to the signs of Autism??!!!
We have telethons...and quick mentions of Autism in America ( or where ever you hail from) but the Average person doesn't seem to know much if it doesn't impact them directly....or like my co workers DON'T KNOW ITS IMPACTING THEM!

So, Mingle...what's your take? People have a right to their ignorance.... or Do we need to shed more light on this!

Hey Teebee...Ignorance is not about rights as much as it is about apathy.....In my experience, most "ignorant" people are completely unaware of their ignorance and the negative impact it can and does have on others...There is no excuse for it, but, unfortunately, there is no cure either!...Ignorance can stem from a multitude of things Teebee...Laziness, narcissism, illness, depression, personal problems, and more...Best not to judge your coworker actions.....Just keep on being a good friend to the man with asperger's syndrome ...From what you are saying, he has made it clear that he prefers anonymity so, as his friend, you have an obligation to keep his confidence....

I guess i must be a little "Different" too
Because some of my closest and truest friends are folks who may be a little different themselves
I think a LOT of so called "Adults" just never really grow up and continue to act childish throughout their entire life
Because picking on or criticizing others somehow makes them feel better about themselves

The only thing I want to say is that if he has confided in you that he has Asperger's then he must trust you. Just honor his wish of not mentioning it.
What's offending me more is that they are so ignorant to the signs of Autism??!!!

It doesn't matter what is wrong with a person, adults should act like adults!

I tried to post this before, but it didn't work.

I just wanted to say that he must trust you if he told you that he has Apsperger's. I would honor his wish that you not mention it to others.

I work with Developmentally Disabled adults. When I am out with them, I refer to them as my friends.

My twelve year old niece in law has down syndrome.

I treat her gently. I wish I could do that to more people.

I just wanted to make a suggestion. I know that in certain work places the workplace is responsible for educating employees about things like sex descrimination, bullying in the workplace, etc.
There are laws now to protect individuals under these circumstances which means someone could be sued if measures are not taken to correct the situation. Is there someone who can diplomatically but sufficiently influence your employer to take action in regard to educating your fellow employees on all these rights? Good Luck!

This may be a case for your employer's human resources department to handle. The Americans with Disabilities Act may have in it something that would protect your co-worker.

By the way, many years ago, I was the step-father of a boy with a severe form of autism. So, I am well acquainted with that form of disability.
