"Please Do Not Thank Me For My Service"
Arnold Stieber, Viet Nam, 1970

"I was in the military, not the "Service". Service is doing something good. Service is what the person who fixes your car does. When the word "Service" is applied to the Military, it helps justify violence as a method of conflict resolution, like "defending our freedom" or "bringing democracy", the word "Service" is used to lower the barriers of aggression.

The military solution to a conflict is death and destruction. That is not "Service", call it what it is- the Military.

If you have to hurt someone to solve a problem, you are the problem."

military also protect and transport supplies

and service doesnt have to be 'good', hitmen provide a service as well

just saying

but its sad a vet felt that way about his job,

I would probably feel neither proud nor ashamed , as its something that someone has to be willing to take on (defending the country',,even when the leaders dont always send them out with noble intentions,,,

but its also a job that they are compensated for like all other jobs,,,

What does the OP have to do with Christmas?

Anyway, the message of the OP is rather naive at best.
Military service is, too, service.

A Time for Everything!

1, To every thing there is a season,
and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
2, A time to be born, and a time to die;
a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
3, A time to kill, and a time to heal;
a time to break down, and a time to build up;
4, A time to weep, and a time to laugh;
a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
5, A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together;
a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
6, A time to get, and a time to lose;
a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
7, A time to rend, and a time to sew;
a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
8, A time to love, and a time to hate;
a time of war, and a time of peace.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8
