A free and open world depends on a free and open Internet. Governments alone, working behind closed doors, should not direct its future. The billions of people around the globe who use the Internet should have a voice.“

Not bloody likely!...Internet access is now pretty much a human right according to the UN. Chck out the 2011 UN Special Rapporteur report:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Right_to_Internet_access

(BTW...Has anyone noticed that https links don't work on Mingle? I had to change the above link to http just to get the link to find the server. For some reason the html for an ssl link winds up with "http://https://..." for the URL.)

i guess when you build your own internet, you can with it as you please... but when others have invested billions of dollars on making sure you can get on facebook, then you'll have to play by their rules...

Absolutely not.

Same way there was an exodus from Myspace, any other site can be abandoned. Nobody owns the internet. They own servers and domains connected to the webs. Anybody can build plugin, and serve.

not only is the internet not free...the cost is beyond a lot of people if they want a reasonable DSL Cable or wireless service, There is a lot that cannot be done on dial up but as long as DSL and mobile cost what they do there is not equal access. The thing that is so silly is that the internet should be cheap, cheap

Considering my tax dollars created tcp, and the fact that I pay a monthly rate for access to the transmission infrastructure, and I myself decide what servers my machine will trade packets with, yes, I do, you can jack dns all day, I still have a hosts file. :-)

Probably should have said something about the add driven nature of sites, [shrugs ] oh well.

exactly...the internet can be supported entirely with adds...that's how there are so many free aps

with all the ads there is no reason for the service fees to be so costly, as far as infrastructure, the DSL lines already exist in most places as phone lines, and if those need to be replaced or installed in older buildings the service providers charge for that in some cases on a case by case basis.

love  thanks lovey, I'd do the same for you:thumbsup:

but I was not actually complaining about my service. I have a pretty good deal. I was more making the point that, even at a good price, it is beyond what some can afford, especially the higher download speeds, so there is not equal access

I can't complain, I get a good deal from SKY. Better than the one I got from BT ( British Telecom ) before, as their service is crap! The amount I paid them each quarter just used to escalate and escalate. Now it stays the same and it's a better service all round!
