1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened 1/2 cup shortening 1 cup confectioners' sugar 1 egg 1-1/2 teaspoons almond extract 1 teaspoon vanilla 2-1/2 cups Gold Medal flour 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon red food color Heat oven to 375. Mix thoroughly butter, shortening, confectioners' sugar, egg and flavoring. Blend in flour and salt. Divide dough in half, blend food color into one half. Shape 1 teaspoon dough from each half into 4-inch rope. for smooth, even ropes, roll them back and forth on lightly floured board. Place ropes side by side; press together lightly and twist. complete cookies one at a time. Place on ungreased baking sheet; curve top of cookie down to form handle of cane. Bake about 9 minutes or until set and very light brown. If you wish, mix 1/2 cup crushed peppermint candy and 1/2 cup granulated sugar. Immediately sprinkle cookies with candy mixture; remove from baking sheet. Makes About 4 dozen cookies. |

Looks like a great recipe except for the part where I smear the mixture all over my cat and throw it in the oven! How did you know I have a cat?

I was at the store today and saw them selling crushed peppermint candy in the baking section.. first time I have seen that already done for you. |

I'll try yours you try mine. Well my Grandmothers.
PEPPERMINT COOKIES 1 cup of browned butter 1 cup of light brown sugar 1 egg beaten 1 tsp of vanilla 2 cups of sifted flour 1 tsp of baking soda 1/2 tsp of sea salt 2 cups of quick cooking oatmeal 1/2 cup of crushed peppermint candy, food processor works great Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Brown the butter in a large flat skillet. Watch carefully not to burn the milk solids in the butter. Cook on low to med heat till light brown color. Remove from heat to a cold metal bowl to cool. Beat in bowl the browned butter and brown sugar, vanilla, until light and fluffy. Blend in egg. Sift together flour, baking soda and salt and combine to creamed mixture. Stir in oatmeal and peppermint candy and mix well. Roll into 1" balls. Bake on greased cookie sheet at 350 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes. Cool completely on wire racks and glaze. GLAZE: 1 1/2 cup of sifted powdered sugar 3 tbsp of evaporated milk 1 drop red food color 4 drops of peppermint flavouring 3 tbsp of crushed peppermint candy Combine powdered sugar, milk, food color, and flavouring and mix well. Drizzle on cookies and sprinkle on candy. |
