Can we return to reality when it comes to the topic of the fabled "soul mate"?

An alleged "soul mate" is a person's mental and emotional twin.

Such a being most likely doesn't exist.

If you insist on dating only someone who thinks and feels like you 100% of the time, then prepare to remain lonely for a very long time.

That great American philosopher Dr. Benjamin Franklin Pierce once said that we look for custom-tailored people in an off-the-rack world.* He was right.

One thing that makes a relationship between two people enjoyable is the fact that the two people aren't mental and emotional twins.

Every person has weaknesses. Thus, it is beneficial to have a mate who is strong where you are weak (and vice-versa).

My late wife and I had a great romance because she and I were not soul mates. Our differences made our relationship strong, not weak.

So, in your quest for romance, keep in mind that planet Earth is an off-the-rack world when it comes to people. The person who can provide you with a great romance may never be the soul mate that you are looking for.

Oy, you are wrong. Are you ever wrong. wrong, wrong, wrong.

Take me, for instance. (Please!!)

I only have eyes for me, and I make love to myself almost every day.

My love for me is growing stronger every day.

I've been loving myself so long, that I can't stop now.

I can't get enough of my love.

I hold my own hand, and I know I can only truly rely on myself and on myself only, if I need a shoulder to cry on and some sweet, tender lips to kiss.

Oh, i almost forgot: I think and feel like myself, all the time, and I feel myself very often, and interestingly I am not lonely for even a minute, despite your spiteful prediction that I will be if I try to hold out for the "soul mate" lover.

--------------

The person who makes up aphorisms, and English proverbs, and similes and idiomatic expressions, would quit his job in anger and in shame, the next day if he or she and I ever met and talked for an hour.

If I was with someone like myself, I would probably kill him.

Enjoying the same things is great, having the same personality would suck. My man makes up where I lack.

I'd be bored with a twin or an exact replica of me!...But I think it's important to have some "common ground." Some sense of being on the "same page" when "push" comes to "shove" and decisions have to be made and problems have to be solved etc...If the cultural gaps are too wide a couple may not be able to hop on the "same page" when need be...But I agree. I'd be bored to death if I tried to live with a carbon copy of myself in all respects!...There wouldn't be anymore "surprises" in life or "alternative views!"...Great thread! Good to think about "who" and "what" we're asking for when we talk about searching for a "soulmate!"

You know, I never thought of that term as meaning one's psychic identical twin. I thought of it as being the person who "fits" you perfectly and whom you also "fit" perfectly, kind of like yin and yang. However, I don't believe in that either.

Soul mates also used to mean two dead pirates, who meet in the afterlife.

This is the only thing I really dislike in the English language. The imprecision, and the fact that meanings are elastic; one size fits all, anyone can mean anything with any word.

A bit (or a lot) like 1984. The book. With newspeak, in which proposed language, very ingeniously, each word means something and also means its own exact opposite.

Let's also reroute ourselves to the precision of the language.

What you mean by "soul mate" has a different expression for use in the English language; it's identifier is "doppelganger".

Like Bravalady said, soul mate is someone who complements you. Your replica is "clone" or "doppelganger", like above.

Yeah, if we don't know the difference between a noun and a verb, (please see the religion forum for an example) at least we should be able to tell the difference between meanings of different words.
