I'm not sure what is so different in Texas than everywhere else these days? I've been in manufacturing and retail for more than half my life and I remember my father(a textiles engineer) commenting on China strategies to take over the industry.
15 years ago China said, "America should not think of making a pair of socks" This rings true today... and then some.

My problem is we're not even playing on a level playing field... My industry involves metal work and the shears and presses of 50 yrs ago are NOT considered safe... I've been shut down for 3 months until I could install safety cages and manual safety switches.

China doesn't require North American safety standards... So the Chinaman who loses a limb gets replaced no problemo... and WE get bogged down by bureaucracy, wages, safety and taxation.

We can't all become service technicians... It just wouldn't work out.
somethings gotta give!

The state says it is going to train veterans in manufacturing jobs....

Hello, aren't all manufacturing jobs just about going to China or elsewhere?

Does this make any sense?

perhaps they can pay the vets an equally low rate,, maybe thats their train of thought...

who knows

huh Manufacturing jobs required skilled labor. Manufacturers pay good wages in order to obtain and to retain good employees. Otherwise, the employees will leave after finding better-paying jobs.

not necessarily, many potential employees accept less than good wages to obtain a job

and employers know this

in a job starved economy, and a 'take whatever is there' backlash from those not starved for jobs

even 'skilled' workers will take lower pay just to be amongst the 'working'

Apparently, what "good wages" are is a matter of opinion.

In Texas they are having difficulty finding enough skilled labor. The pay and benefits are good. Vets are having more difficulty finding jobs so the State is trying to put the two together.
