How is it possible that a presidential candidate can be arrested for going to a presidential debate?

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Police say the Green Party candidates for president and vice president have been arrested at the second presidential debate.

Nassau County, New York, police say Jill Stein, the Green presidential nominee, and Cheri Honkala, the vice-presidential nominee, were charged with disorderly conduct as they tried to enter the debate site at Hofstra University.

The Green Party says in a statement that Stein and Honkala were walking with supporters toward the Hofstra campus Tuesday afternoon when they were met by uniformed police officers. Stein and Honkala then held an impromptu press conference in which Stein called the debate a "mockery of democracy."

A third person was later charged with disorderly conduct.

They arn't real candidates and the Green Party isn't a real party. They were there to just disrupt the debate.

Yes. These 3rd parties are real parties.

You can say that they were there to 'disrupt' the debate, because having 3rd party candidates participate would be very 'disruptive' to the way the main two parties want things to be.

Here in Pennsylvania I had to register as "Other", even after I explained to the lady the PA Supreme Court fined the PA Dems for trying to keep Nadar off the ballot.

and everyone wonders why this country s in the condition i is in

the two worst terrorist groups when it comes to detroyin our constitution have a debate and lock out all others from participating

and you make jokes about it

sounds like castro way back when to me

we send our troops around the world to start up democracies which in reality are republics as is the united states but most do not take govt serious enough to know what kind of govt they have...

...as our troops go away; and some give the ultimate sacrifice to allow others freedoms; we allow our freedom of choice to be stifled by the two major groups and he media who are in their pocket

this country is in a slow downward spiral and it is the fault o those that put up with this kind of behavior from the dems and repub groups and still vote for one of them because they are lessor of two evils in their mind

regardless of which evil you vote for you will get evil if they win

you say no one else has a chance to win.....

well as long as people vote for evil you are right but if enough start voting other parties then maybe the people will get some power back

if you vote for evil you deserve what you get

so quit yer complaining or vote other party and try and start a difference movement or keep your evil doers in office and suffer the consequences

You are right of course Robin. Our choices (freedoms) are being stifled by the limitations imposed by a two party system.

And the masses being lazy, do not want to go outside of what is offered in search of better.

I agree.

I will still do my duty and vote. I am Unaffiliated on my registration. So I claim no loyalty.

What Irony. Lpdon, do you understand the definition of a Corporation? A Corporation, by law, is a "Legal Fiction". A "Fiction" as in imaginary, a made up fallacy, a lie, a cartoon... a Fiction, but Legal. These Fictions given the full power of a living human can, and do outlive us, gathering enormous power and wealth the older they get. General Motors for example huge, well beyond what any person could ever amass in but a mere lifetime. Yet let's go to court and sit General Motors in that witness chair. You can't, because General Motors is a FICTION, you can only sit a representative there, because there is no "REAL" General Motors.

Now these hugely powerful, and immensely wealthy, legal "fictions" throw their weight behind a candidate, and you call a Candidate that only mere, but very real people stand behind, "not real". Lpdon, can you see the irony?

boredinaz06, glad to see someone beat me to the post!!!

Conrad You should tell us dummies that you are from Zurich, when we are discussing US politics, helps us relate. But heck we had a Republican that took all our Gold away from us all together, trade it all for paper.

Truly if you read American History, you will see that the Democrats and Republicans started as one Party. So why should it be strange that the two parties both do the same things, or compliment each other. The whole election process is just a farce put on more like a pep rally for some stupid ball game, and the majority of the people are stupid enough to follow right along. I mean, how many have died for bad politics, in this country and others. I'm not just talking oil wars, but death marches, concentration camps, slavery. We have seen it all, time and time again, yet every time people are stupid enough not to avoid it, and even when it comes, they just comply.

huh In what parallel universe?

The Republican Party was started in order to oppose the continuation of slavery in the USA, which the Democratic Party supported.

If you had made the above-quoted claim at the end of the U.S. Civil War, then you would have been heckled by Democrats and Republicans alike.

The debate was a private event created by private parties. So, participation in the debate was by invitation only. So, the people who attempted to crash the event were arrested.
