Hi Everyone,

I got diagnosed as borderline diabetic this week. I have to lose the few extra pounds I have gained and I have to exercise. Exercise is hard because I sprained my ankle very badly in the winter and I thought it was better and it's reinjured.

Anyway, it's scary.

Terri

When an ex started losing weight (he ate a LOT)
I immediately bought a meter to test his
blood sugar levels.
Sure enough, they were 300-400.
Went to doctor right away, and he put him on
one pill a day.
I completely changed his diet to meet
diabetic standards.

Most normal people will register between 80 and 100.
Diagnosis is usually made if it is 70-110.
He started measuring it, but because we caught
it so early on, he stopped and went to the doctor
for a special 6-month test, which apparently
tells more of the story.

That was 30 years ago..he is now up to 3 pills
a day, but it is completely in control.
Diet is EVERYthing.

Being pre-diabetic is just a wake-up call to pay attention
to what you eat, and use exercise as a tool to help
stay in control.

(BTW, I used the meter to measure my own blood sugar which
was usually around 50, also went to doctor for that 5 hour
fasting test, to find out I was hypoglycemic (low blood sugar)
as opposed to hyperglycemic (high blood sugar.)

My body OVER-produces insulin which can also lead
to diabetes.

You can also test yourself before, during
and after meals to see what your personal triggers are,
this can be VERY helpful.

Best of luck...be aware! :-)

My best friend was diagnosed as pre diabetic. She has to exercise and eat differently than she used to.
It sounds like you have to wait to exercise.
Wishing you the bestflowerforyou

Soufie is correct about watching your diet. My brother didn't and now he has so many complications from the diabetes that its too long to list. When I do say diet; I mean just changing the way you eat not actually going on a diet. I actually eat a lot like a diabetic myself as its much healthier. You will be surprised on how much weight you can drop just by making little changes to way you prepare food.

I'm type 2 and I've been on insuline for about 5 yrs..I've had several surgerys on my legs and foot in the last 3 yrs.. You can still exercise your upper body and also lift free weights.. I just bought some of those weights at W-marts and they're not expensive...or you can use cans of veggies...lol I've been diabetic for over 25 yrs, have tried to eat properly (it's not always easy) and exercise any way I can..
I was a high risk for diabetes as I had large babies..(11 lbs, 9 lbs 14ozs, 8 lbs 10 ozs and 7 lbs 8ozs) Take care of yourself because the alternatives are not nice....good luck

Swimming is a great low impact exercise with your ankle problem. Contact your local Easter Seals Society and the YMCA/YWCA they often allow those with medical necessity to use their pools at minimal or no cost on slideing scale fees.

And the exercise bands are really inexpensive and can help you work around injuries, burn a lot of calories, and really tones up muscles.

Joining the American Diabetes Association is a great way to learn good stuff, make nice friends, and it includes their great magazine. On line sites have great info.

I have been on a diabetic diet, because my dad and best friend are, for the most part of a decade and I really believe it has a lot to do with my over all upturn in health. I didn't make any huge changes over night but you find great products and recipes and it just gets to be habit.

Good Luck!
