PHOENIX (AP) - A federal judge has ruled that Arizona authorities can enforce the most contentious section of the state's immigration law, which critics have dubbed the "show me your papers" provision.

The ruling Wednesday by U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton clears the way for police to carry out the 2010 law's requirement that officers, while enforcing other laws, question the immigration status of those they suspect are in the country illegally.

The requirement has been at the center of a two-year legal battle that culminated in a U.S. Supreme Court decision in June upholding the requirement.

Opponents then asked Bolton to block the requirement and argued it would lead to racial profiling of Latinos.

Less controversial sections of the law have been in effect since late July 2010.

The governor's office says the law is expected to go into effect shortly.

Its about friggin time this Bolton chick got squared away.

IM still not understanding what would prompt a constitutionally valid reason to ask about someones 'immigration status'....

I Mean, will EVERYONE be asked, and then those who arent immigrants and therefore dont have immigrant papers,,,,

what happens to them?

I'm sure anytime anyone will be stopped they will be asked. I'm white and wear my rebel flag cap everywhere I go and even still when I go through a BP check point I'm asked a bunch of jack assy questions.

that seems fair, if they ask everyone

but what happens if you say you arent an immigrant,,,do they check everyones status on some computer network by their name or ss#?

Bored.
A lot of folks who don't live in border areas have little idea how border patrol or border law enforcement works.
Are you a citizen?
What is your business here?
What is your destination?
Are you transporting anything illegal?
Are you transporting any undeclared items from Mexico?

Couple years ago DHS took over BP. They had/have the authority to pull you over and detain you indefinately.
They stop and check anywhere. Not just checkpoints.
The cops here are Mexican and have family just across the border.
A couple things would happen if they asked for papers. They would get harassed here and their families in Mexico could get everything from harassed to dead.
They should enforce immigration law but, they won't.

If they have no ID or papers, they can be hauled in to verify status.

Again. Federal Law requires Immigrants to have their papers on them AT ALL TIMES.
