The Knights Templar ceased to exist in the 14th century because of the church. The Templars were arrested, tried and executed in show trials and there was nothing left of them.

The modern groups claiming to be templars started in the 18th centuary as nothing more then fraternaties and people seem to ignore or be blind to the 400 year gap where they didn't exist and declined.

Actually, only a percentage of the Templars were tried. Many escaped to places like Scotland and Switzerland and led different lives. It is believed they were the beginnings of Freemasonry which continues to this day. Modern fraternities are based on Freemasonry.
