Thank you. But I'm not talking about magic and spell craft. Voodoo and Santeria are both religions and that is what I am interested in.

Unfortunately, other then being aware of the deities, I didn't care for what I read or saw. Santeria, especially, is still into the animal sacrifice, though under the guise of "respect" for the animals, but I personally don't see it that way.

I also have issues with some of the formatting, such as deities "riding" their worshippers. Come to find out, a lot of the women priestesses, especially, were raped and abused as children, so they know how to get out of their head, so to speak, and I see that as a continuing for of rape, even if they, supposedly, are willing.

Thank you. I knew you would have the low-down on these. flowerforyou

I wasn't aware of Santeria still doing animal sacrifice.

I know there is a Voodoo Priestess here in my city and she had a run in with Code Enforcement over animal sacrifice in her back yard. I had heard that most Voodoo followers do not do the sacrifices anymore, but I guess there are still some that do.

I'm actually not surprised about the rape and abuse. frown

So, do you remember the titles of any of the books you read?

Thank you!

A local friend of mine recommended The Diloggun: The Orishas, Proverbs, Sacrifices, and Prohibitions of Cuban Santeria

So, I'm starting with that and a book on Haitian Voodoo.

But, I added your recommendations to my cart on Amazon for next time. flowerforyou

Halfway through "Haitian Voudou". Which is, apparently, different than Louisiana Voodoo. Fascinating stuff.

Mostly I've read the history of Haiti, which you need to kind of know to understand the religion (oh and, apparently, it's not a religion) and how it came to be what it is today. I had had a general knowledge of Haiti, but what I read was really an eye opener and a very tragic story.

I don't practice Santeria,
I ain't got no crystal ball,
Well I had a million dollars but I,
I'd spend it all,
If I could find that heina and that sancho that she's found,
Well I'd pop a cap in sancho and I'd slap her down.

What I really wanna know,
My baby,
What I really want to say I can't define,
Well it's love that I need, oh,
But my soul will have to,
Wait till I get back find heina of my own,
Daddy's gonna love one and all.
[ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsfreak.com/s/sublime/santeria_20133073.html ]
I feel the break,
Feel the break,
Feel the break and I got live it out,
Oh, yea huh, well I swear that I,
What I really wanna know,
My baby,
What I really want to say I can't define,
Got love make it go,
My soul will have to...

Ohhh, what I really wanna say,
My baby,
What I really wanna say is I've got mine,
And I'll make it, yes, I'm comin' up.

Tell Sanchito that if he knows what is good for him he best go run and hide,
Daddy's got a new .45,
And I won't think twice to stick that barrel straight down sancho's throat,
Believe me when I say that I got somethin' for his punk ***.

What I really wanna know,
My baby,
Oh what I really wanna say is there's just one,
Way back,
And I'll make it, yea,
But my soul will have to wait.

Yeah, yeah, yeah

Also, Serpent and the Rainbow gives scientific background of the chemicals used to make zombies.

The making of zombies is a Haitian thing not something that is a part of Haitian Voudou. Hollywood has done much to distort the real Voudou.

I haven't read up on Santeria yet because the book I wanted wasn't on Kindle. So, I'm waiting for it in the mail.

According to the book I'm reading on Voudou, animal sacrifice is something that occurs rarely, but it does occur.

Considering what happens to the animals in the commercial farms where we get our meat, I have no problem with the animal sacrifices of these religions. It is a much more humane killing and treatment of the animal than they get here in America where they are "just" food.

Santeria is the worship of the Orishas which are the primordial energies of creation and the movement that guides human conciousness. Contrary to popular belief, there is no mixture between Catholocism and Santeria. The saints were merely used as a mask to hide the worship of the Orishas when the religion was forbidden and forced to go underground in Cuba. Building Character, ceremony, initiation, divination and animal offering are essential elements of this religion.
