A Lake Michigan lighthouse takes the brunt of a frigid winter in Saint Joseph, Michigan.
The southeastern shores of all of the Great Lakes often experience lake-effect snow. When strong winds blow across an unfrozen and relatively warm lake, the moist air coming off the water encounters cooler temperatures over land and lake water becomes precipitation, or ice. |

Now, that's a wave.
Surfers ride a huge wave at Waimea Bay, Hawaii, during the 2009 Eddie Aikau memorial surf contest. To honor its fearless namesake, the competition is held only in extreme conditions. Contestants had been waiting five years for the surf to pound Oahu’s North Shore this aggressively. |

A waterspout parallels a lightning strike over Lake Okeechobee in Florida. A sister of the tornado, waterspouts are generally less powerful.

I'm terrible, haha...I've looked at this thread a few times with a few pictures of my own.
Here's Mount Bierstadt in Colorado. And Mount Evans also in Colorado...I have plans to hike all of the Fourteeners in Colorado, something like 54ish, two down. |

Northern Lights in Iceland
Interesting notes about this picture: This Month in Photo of the Day: Your Photos On this night northern lights had been predicted, so I decided to find a nice spot on the Reykjanes peninsula. However, the sky wasn't very cooperative, especially in the far distance, so on my way over I stopped near an abandoned house, where it was less cloudy. In some ways the outcome was really not so bad because the clouds, the blue spots in the sky, the green northern lights, and the orange reflection of the Reykjavik city lights all mixed together in a multicolor light show. (This photo and caption were submitted to My Shot.) What Makes This a Photo of the Day? The cloudy weather, city lights, and aurora come together to make this a layered and complex shot. This is also a great example of working with the conditions you have rather than with those you anticipated and finding them to be ideal after all. —Alexa Keefe, Photo of the Day editor |

This picture does not do tonight's full moon justice. It was so beautiful with the clouds moving over and around it. Perfect ending to the sunset at the beach.

She looks sweet grooming her chick, but don't mess with mom's nest: Ural owls are aggressively territorial. These owls are in Estonia.
