The Scarlet Ibis inhabits tropical South America and islands of the Caribbean. In form it resembles most of the other twenty-seven extant species of ibis, but its remarkably brilliant scarlet coloration makes it unmistakable.

This medium-sized wader is a hardy, numerous, and prolific bird, and it has protected status around the world. Its IUCN status is "least concern".

I LOVE butterflies! When I went to Massachusetts back in 2008 I got to go to a butterfly sanctuary. You walked into this large area completely netted off and there were tons of butterflies. There were benches where you could just sit and watch them.

Well, it's in Madison County, Iowa. This one is about three miles north of Winterset, IA, just past the country club. As near as I could find this is the only "Bridge of Madison County" that you are still allowed to drive over.

I'm curious as to why a structure was built on bridges like these.

This Month in Photo of the Day: Your Photos

I entered the water on a cloudy day in late fall. This is the subarctic underwater world, and few people have ever photographed ciscoes in their natural habitat. Even stranger, this is a rare dwarf form of cisco with a riverine life history component (adfluvial).

After a few minutes, the sun began periodically breaking through the clouds. I noticed this by the strange beams of light fading and reappearing in the current.

Incredible giant 'roll cloud' looms over photographer's house

Sometimes, the pictures come to you. A wedding photographer managed to be lucky enough to step outside his front door and witnesses this incredible scene.
Rob Sharrock snapped up his Nikon D300 and dashed out to capture this monstrous roll cloud which seems to go on forever.

Mr Sharrock , from Warrnambool, Victoria, Australia, lives in the house with the awning to the left of the frame.


The roll cloud is a subtype of arcus cloud - the funnel is horizontal and does not connect to the ground.The other subtype of arcus is a shelf cloud, which also often appear to precede storm fronts.
