The grill in my pic, the one behind me are made from 90% salvaged materials. Costs me maybe 15.00 in materials and electricity to build them.
They sell for 150.00 They last almost forever. I salvage old hot water heaters, air tanks, propane tanks, metal, lumber or anything that draws my attention. I was out walking with some cousins in Ms. There was a solid wood three drawer dresser out at the street. I snatched that sucker up and had to carry it by myself. The others were too embarrassed to be seen with me. The other day, I pulled a bunch of used JC Penny store furnishings out of a dumpster. Sold 200.00 of it and still have another 500.00 worth to sell. I do the dumpster dive almost every time I go into town. |

I have been known to curb a few things here and there...
Have a friend of mine she furnished her house with stuff she found at the curb. Furniture she would take it and clean it up sand it ect was some nice stuff when she finished with it... One man's trash is another man's treasure~~~ |

I've never done it,but I guess it's becoming a big thing? I saw a few shows, that followed people who did it and what they found. They would find stuff and refinish it.

I hope it doesn't get too big. I like the lack of competition.

oh yeah..I love junk!!!...So many things you can do with it.My father and his brother were welders when I was going up..and they went to auctions and estate sales..would buy by the lot..I learned my love of savaging from going through the truck loads of stuff they would buy..so many treasures just waiting for someone to fix them up!

I am. I live in a college town where the kids have more brains than money. I noticed that when walking the dog there were things in the dumpster that I could use. I have even found wrapped Christmas presents. But my best prize was a plastic cabinet that contained and nice camera and white gold class ring. The ring netted over $200 at the pawn shop.

I went out "scrappin" a few times with some friends that do it regularly. The big thing here in NY is metal. Grab anything metal and off to the scrap yard for cash. Matter of fact...we have problems with thieves stripping metal/copper/piping out of homes and businesses. A few weeks back someone tried to break our circuit breaker box at my office to trip off the alarms. Surely they were gonna try to get in and probally strip it of everything.

I get calls to clean out rentals.
Before I send the crew in, I go through and pull what I want. I use craigslist, a free ad here in town, a radio program that plays 30 min. every morning, yard sales and flea markets to get rid of stuff. Hauled away a free 97 toyota that needed a tranny. It's up for sale now. It's a great hobby. |

I used to do it DAILY, and found things you would not believe.
A diamond ring once, and the receipt in the bag, for almost $1000.00, right after Christmas. Must have pizzed her off. I refuse to get IN them, because of diapers, needles, maggots, ect... Now, when we have curbside in our area, ITS ON AND CRACKIN!! I always ask first, and then look inside the house to see where the stuff came from. Oh and BTW..my BBQ is the kind with the side burners, a prep table, shelves underneath, ect..........I got it free in perfect condition when it was sitting in someones yard, with a free sign on it, while I was out jogging. YOU KNOW I rolled that sucker home!! Right down the side of the street, with people beeping and yelling at me! |
