Here's a simple test to try.

Find the run menu and type into the box "regedit" and hit enter. If you can't find the run menu, search your harddrive for it and try dbl-clicking it.

If you get the insufficient permissions error, search the HD for regedit and copy it to the desktop. Rename the copy on the desktop and change the extension from .exe to .bat or .com. and then run that copy from your desktop. If it runs with an extension or .bat or .com but NOT .exe, you probrably have a virus.

This sounds like a virus that was around many years ago...

It was a test to see if you got the "insufficient permission" error. There was a virus many years back that would prevent a person from running regedit as well as updating or removing anti-virus programs.

If you can run regedit, you don't have that virus.

I don't think you have the virus. I think it's more likely to be a failing HDD.

Ok not sure if you still need help, but I'm not sure that the system is free of virus/spyware.

Can you still download programs and install them? if yes, get this program: http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free
It's free spyware scanner.

Are you running Windows XP?
Is this a desktop or laptop?

I'm going to be buying a new laptop. If you want my HP 2000, you can have it.

I'm keeping the RAM though, so you'll have to buy RAM for it, but everything else is good on it. It has a DVD burner and Windows 7 Premium.

Let me know if you want it, and I'll let you know when I get a new laptop.

I want to get the new Samsung Series 8. I have an RV511 now, and it's still pretty awesome.
YES, YES, YES, I WANT IT, PICK ME, PICK ME!!!surprised

My computer is a 7 year old Dell.frustrated

HEY NOW! explode What's wrong with a 7 y/o Dell? noway I have an 11 y/o Dell laptop and I'm still using it as my primary machine! surprised I will admit though, that 2 years ago I did replace most of it's innards......

Depending upon which components you replaced, it may not be considered the same machine anymore.

Geeeezzz, what a bunch of crap. If your computer is that old then you have a lot of problems.

1. Your registry is probably a total mess by now.

2. You do not and will not have enough memory to run many of today's program. My guess is you have 2 gigs or less of memory (probably less) and you may or may not have the space for 2 more gig of memory. It will depend on your motherboard. If you do have the space, 2 more gigs would solve a lot of your problems.

3.Your processor is an old 32bit P4. It has been cooking at around 180F for a lot of years. It is slowing down.

Best solution: Throw it out the window and watch it bounce down the driveway.

OR

Put all them memory in that it will take. cost $60 to $100. Start removing programs that you can live without.

Let's see...... used MB, used DVD rom, used keyboard, new battery, new power supply, new RAM and a new HD come to mind off hand. Ok, well, the case and display are still the 'same' machine, but it's still mostly an 11 y/o mutt. laugh

No, no, it really actually works pretty good, considering. Yeah I only have 1.50 gigs of memory, and it will hold 2.00. I had a half a gig, and replaced one of them with a 1 gig stick (it will hold 2 sticks) so im working with 1.50 now. They arent cheap when your poor!laugh laugh

And yes, I have removed pretty much everything. I dont have crap downloaded in my programs...REALLY!

I just want this damn Internet Explorer to stop saying its running with no add ons, when all the add ons are enabled. If I do that, THEN I can use my Windows Update again. Yes, I have great virus and maleware protection, and ThreatFire, and I run them daily, along with defrag, disk cleanup, clean out cache, and CC Cleaner,,,which is why my computer still runs good being this old, and having all original parts except for one memory stick.

Find your run box and type into it "iexplore" (without quotes) and hit enter.

Ok, that brings up IE without saying no add ons, but how do I get to Windows Update from there?
