From a news report published by LiveScience:

The reigning theory of particle physics may be flawed, according to new evidence that a subatomic particle decays in a certain way more often than it should, scientists announced.

The news report pertains to something called "the BaBar experiment".

Babar was not available for comment:

Is there a science geek here who understands what the news report is talking about? Why should anyone care how subatomic particles decay?

Also, what gives scientists the authority to say how subatomic particles should behave? Shouldn't scientists simply explain how subatomic particles would behave if their theory is correct?

i read this article, and what they are basically saying is that they have a 'norm' how particles act and behave by what they have observed in the particles they know of... now they found some new particles that behave out of their norm, and they have to rewrite what 'normal' is for particles to behave.... thats why science is a bit flawed, because they can only speculate on what they do not know, and they base everything on what they do know...

In a way, this isn't news. The Standard Theory of particle physics was created because most common particles at the time behaved in very predictable ways. A theory was made to combine all particles which also lead to "predicted particles" and predicted forces acting upon particles, and various particle behaviors.

The Standard Theory had a couple of big holes to start with. It predicted gravity but couldn't be proven (That is what the Higgs Boson is all about). It fell apart with great distances and at very small scales so it was, at best, a description of events within a very small range of scale.

Before the Standard Theory physicists were finding new particles almost every day. Later it was realized that what they were observing was transitions from one type of particle to another.

Last year it was discovered that neutrinos can change from one type to another which violates the Standard Theory. This year, they are finding particles at CERN that aren't supposed to exist.

The Standard Theory is a bit like Newton's Laws. They work great for 99% of the time, but you need a little Einstein to make them perfect. No one has made the Standard Theory perfect yet. It actually seems to be getting a little less perfect as time goes on.

Yep, right now we have a patch work quilt of particle physics.

We may learn why the predictions where off in much the same way we learned about carbon resonance (and then just modify the SM), but who knows, hopefully time will tell.

The journalists have to make it sound exciting to someone other than a physicists.

Sir, i've been in touch with my seniors n there is discovery of new particles who have more speed than light n the experiment was conducted in France and they sent these particles from one lab to another quickly than light proving wrong the equation E=mc2 n this would be added soon in physics....

Actually, that test was found later to be a matter of bad wiring. It was corrected and the speed of light was not broken. The particles were neutrinos which are not new.

Today's Insights by Science isn't necessarily the last word on a Subject, that's why it is Science!
Evolving as new knowledge is added!
Nothing wrong with having to revise certain things!
Would be wrong if they didn't!

A-bomb n reactors work on old equation they will work morw efficiently now with reduced loss of energy...... Thats science discovery some day surely becomes history....

The discovery to which you refer was a MISTAKE. It has been corrected. Nothing changed.

The Standard Model has always had holes in it. Some things it explains well. A few things don't work as predicted.

No dude it was never a mistake.... u have been mistaken.... The research is going on, on those particles n they r namd "neutrino". it was a rumor that it was a mistake in calculating speed n time. Bt it is nt so....n the equation will change....

Neutrino experiment was found to have flaws. Neutrinos were never
actually observed to go faster than the speed of light.

then show me the adjusted Equation!
And explain how the Universe and nuclear Reactions will function with a fluid Speed of Light!
Guess we will have to install faulty wiring everywhere into every Experiment!

BBC showed they did.... the speed of light will be replaced by their speed. New equations will be at ur home in an year.

Speed of Light was measured,NOT calculated!
Tell me me how you will calculate Energy with a Variable Speed of Light?
Your Seniors will have to keep looking!

Speed of light will not come into count so where the variability came from .... the c wil be replaced by new symbol.... n everythng will get its energy in respect to new particles nt light.... my seniors r too carrying out experiments n the results will be before world soon....

they are working on a wrong assumption!
laugh

and loose Wires!
You can't just go and replace a Component of an Equation and expect the same functionality!
Anyway,I wish them well in that variable Universe!
BTW,how come Einstein's Equation worked since it is so wrong?

Dumb heads would found it wrong only...laugh
Things didn't worked on it, bt with respect to it. Which will be changed now. Thats it
