Even if he was a 9er, he was also one of the legends of the game and even more one of the "Good Guys" of the game. *raises one to Bill*drinker

Contrary to popular belief Bill Walsh tho a brilliant football stratigist did not invent the west coast offense. It was invented by the Minnesota Vikings under Bud Grant. not to take away from Walsh who fine tuned it and made it his own.

Actually - Part-time, it was Paul Brown with the Cincinnati Bengals who created the "West Coast Offense" - and Bill Walsh was on his coatching staff. By the way - the name "West Coast Offense" was named by Bill Parcels in reference to the offense that the 49'ers used. However - you are right - it was not "invented" by Walsh. Just perfected by him.

I have extremely fond memories of Bill Walsh. I was living in San Francisco at the time that he was hired (1979), and the 49'ers were by far the WORST team in Football. But I didn't really care - I was a Patriot fan - until the 3rd game of 1980. The Patriots were playing Denver - at mile high - and Fumbled the opening kick-off at the 5 yard line. One play later - Denver scored. They managed to catch the next kick-off, but fumbled the ball on the next play. Denver scored on the next play. 1:35 seconds into the game and it was 14 to 0!
The next series - the Patriots threw an interception - and at that point - I became a 49'ers fan. Went out that day and bought a 49'ers sweatshirt. They had a rookie Quarterback named Joe Montana. He became my guy. By the next year - they delivered a Super Bowl. These days - though I bleed Patriot Blue and Silver - I will always have a place in my heart for the San Francisco 49'ers - and a Hall of Fame coach named Bill Walsh. One of the greatest ever.

Barbie;

Yeah - but that was a token "sign 'em when they're through" kind of thing. Like Willie Mays going to the Mets. Always hated O.J. cause he played for Buffalo. When you live in New England - you HAVE to hate Buffalo. By the way Barb. The greatest player in my lifetime (or at least my favorite) who ever played in the NFL played for the Packers. Reggie White! I broke down and cried when he passed away.
