Soldier boy, let me correct you on this statement you made here. The cold war was NOT an arms race between the USSR and teh United States. YES we were both racing to come up with something bigger and badder sooner, but the race itself was not what termed the name "cold war". it was terrmed so for all the soldiers ON BOTH SIDES sittind out in their tents waiting for orders that never came, stating that one side or the other attacked first.

In the very basic and simplistic temms the cold war was a staring contest between the two countries. Neither one was willing to back down, and neither one was willing to press "the button" (the button=nuclear war).

The two presidents sat staring at each other non stop, and due to this all our soldiers (again on both sides) sat outside waiting for word to come down that hostilities actually began.

Now, that is not to say that there was not warfare, or action or anything. There most certainly was, just nothing fully open to the public or talked about.
