thats because of your blind faith leads you to different answers... but of course, since your a believer, you cannot be wrong...

Just look one post down from this one, where I admit to making a mistake. You are using a logical fallacy call "Appeal to Ridicule". I admit when I'm wrong. My faith is not blind. My faith does not influence my understanding of the Crusades. Only the first Crusade can be fully justified by history, but the fact that the soldiers were Christians doesn't make them evil or the fact that they were defending themselves from invaders wrong.

i never have thought any religion was evil, or bad. i just think that organized religion is bad, because they use the word of god for their personal agenda. when you were talking about people that blow up abortion clinics, the only thing i could think of is that what god would want? a god of peace would not want anyone to speak or take actions for him. I think you took this article the wrong way. Even you have to admit that sometimes some religious fanatics take things a bit to far and make themselves look silly.

I know that atheists love to work themselves into a lather about how violent and ignorant Christians are, but it's just delusions to reassure them of their intellectual superiority to believers. A superiority that only exists in their own desperate minds.

When are you going to stop trying to act superior to others because of your beliefs?

That's your opinion. I hope you can see that other reasonable people could have a different opinion.

I think you took this article the wrong way.

The article was a pack of half truths and outright lies! You took it at face value, I did the leg work to see if it was even accurate. You took it the wrong way, I took it the right way with healthy skepticism.

Even you have to admit that sometimes some religious fanatics take things a bit to far and make themselves look silly.

"Even me". laugh

Yes, religious fanatics often do go a bit too far. Like smearing people of another religion as ignorant, violent neanderthals. The people described in the (original) article didn't go too far. Bill Nye went too far when he took a science lecture for kids and turned it into a discussion of what he perceives as flaws in the Bible.

how do you know thats just how people took it? I don't ever here of bill attacking the bible... i never read where he said "flaws in the bible", he just simply said the moon doesn't emit light.... fanatics can take something as simple as that as an attack on their religion, as you seem to be doing now...

He should have gone for the tri-fecta and told them the earth is actually about 8 billion years old and terrestrial life crawled out of the water.

lol... they woulda shot him...laugh laugh

Because Christians are really known for doing that, right? As wrong as they were, the abortion clinic attackers only killed because they saw abortion as murder and felt they were protecting innocent babies. How often have Christians killed people for expressing unpopular ideas?

crusades mean anything to ya?
to be fair, the Crusades however violent, were an answer to a Threat!

just another power struggle... the Catholics left their country to invade another, in the name of god...how many people have died in the name of their god/gods?

The Emmy-winning scientist angered a few audience members when he criticized literal interpretation of the biblical verse Genesis 1:16, which reads: “God made two great lights - the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars.”

He pointed out that the sun, the “greater light,” is but one of countless stars and that the “lesser light” is the moon, which really is not a light at all, rather a reflector of light.

Bill Nye brought up the Bible and started pointing out what he perceived as flaw.

You really are a dogmatic atheist. You can't even admit that Catholics had the right to protect themselves from invasion.

It's not the truth, it is what he perceives as the truth. As I pointed out in my first post, the word "light" doesn't mean a direct source of light. Bill Nye thought he was making an important point about inaccuracies in the Bible, he was really just making a jackass out of himself.

maybe i'm not as informed as you, but invading another country, killing entire villages for not conforming to their standards, then saying they were protecting themselves?... they were not even an army, no organization or leadership, all because the word of the pope?

maybe you know something i don't, because i just don't see it...

I hadn't read this post till now....and I need to comment on this...

"How often have Christians killed people for expressing unpopular ideas?"

Ever hear of the Spanish Inquistion? Salem witch hunts? How about Ireland, or 100 other countries?

Religion has killed more people than a combination of most everything else!

your entitled to your opinion... as for me, i'll take the word of a scientist over a fanatic any day of the week...
so i gather you feel that every christian believes the same as you on this?
you also have to remember, just because you interpret the bible your way, others interpret their way...

You are very clearly uninformed. At the time of the First Crusade, the Muslim armies were the largest and best equipped in the world. The Christian armies were mostly farmers and peasants. Their lands were being invaded. By the time of the first Crusade, Muslim armies had conquered all of the Middle East, which had been largely Christian, and were encroaching on Europe.

you seem to looking at this as some kind of war... it was more of a murder type deal, where they were attacking villages. and the crusaders lost, eventually. so how did this stop the mighty Muslim army?

So, to put a face on war and the reasons for it, is religion or the lack of it.....

Think I'll abstain, thank you!

Historians have viewed the Crusades as a mixture of benefits and horrors. On one hand, there was a new knowledge of the East and the possibilities of trade to be found there, not to mention the spread of Christianity. On the other hand, Christianity was spread in a violent, militaristic manner, and the result was that new areas of possible trade turned into new areas of conquest and bloodshed. A number of non-Christians lost their lives to Christian armies in this era, and this trend would continue in the inquisitions of the coming centuries.

The Crusades were a series of wars by Western European Christians to recapture the Holy Land from the Muslims. The Crusades began in 1095 and ended in the mid- or late 13th century. The term Crusade was originally applied solely to European efforts to retake from the Muslims the city of Jerusalem, which was sacred to Christians as the site of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. It was later used to designate any military effort by Europeans against non-Christians.
