that law enforcment goes with which ever stary is told the same by the
most.

I am coming into this story a little late, but I think you did right to
call the police. In some states, if you had taken it into your own hands
and beat the person up, he could turn around and sue you for his damages
(happens all the time) and you could have gone to jail for assault,
etc., he could have had a gun in the apartment and opened fire on all of
you and killed you all, thare are lots of ways this could have gone bad.
I have called the police in the past for domestics, once when a man was
beating his pregnant wife. I have the misfortune of living by some
homeless people cabins and they heat up periodically and last summer a
couple there fought constantly, thought it was him, actually was his
pregnant young girlfriend assaulting him, police even filed DV charges
on her against their newborn baby because she was tossing the stroller
around so badly during a fight with him. I always say call the police,
they are trained, always go in with back up. Better to be safe.
(Remember a story where a man shot an intruder in his home in the butt,
the intruder later sued him for big bucks, caused an injury that
affected his ability to support himself, etc., and the intruder won a
big settlement - really sucks I know.).
