President Obama and GOP front-runner Mitt Romney often rely on the help of a teleprompter when speaking in public. Rick Santorum does not.
The former senator has been quick to point out that difference to voters on the campaign trail but over the weekend he went one step further and delivered this applause-seeking line at Mississippi campaign event (via CNN ):
"See, I always believed that when you run for president of the United States, it should be illegal to read off a teleprompter."
Santorum continued his attack on teleprompters, saying that they allow politicians to read "someone else'swords" that have been "focus-grouped" and are penned by "pollsters and speechwriters," and not the candidate themselves.
"You're voting for someone who is going to be the leader of our government," he continued. "It's important for you to understand who that person is in their own words, seethem, look them in the eye...hear what's(in their) heart. ... You're choosing a leader. A leader isn't just about what's written on a piece ofpaper."

Santorum may be fudging a bit, or he may actually speak 'off the whim'

Its doubtful that works well for a 'speech' that lasts more than five or ten minuntes unless one has an iadectic memory though

people who give speeches make notes, refer to written references,, etc,,, to keep track of the points they want to make

there is no need to outlaw it, unless we also outlaw people speaking more than ten minutes at a time,,,

I think he really has something there. But it would be a much
better test if the teleprompters were allowed to be used but made
in such a way that they would fail spontaneously at a random point
in any given speech. That way we could really examine the candidate's
grasp of the issues. Plus it would have entertainment value and we
could bet on it in Vegas!

I think its fine as it is

speeches follow some order and can hit many points, I wouldnt want to demand people memorize every point they wished to cover just to prove some point,,,,

Yep...

I get quite an education watching the President when he is reading them.

I can tell now when he 'goes up on his lines' (this is when he is at his best in a speach).

I can also tell when he is thinking 'What idiot wrote this'...

Which seems to be happening a lot lately.

Wonder how long before he gets rid of the writers.

You would think someone who has graduated Magna Cum Laude wouldn't need a teleprompter........

Have you ever actually seen people give speeches? Most have note cards of some sort.

I agree. Teleprompters dont make anyone smart of stupid. They just help with their memory.

They also allow someone in the shadows to control the converstation.
