It isn't the phones, it's the people. Phones aren't forcing people to abbreviate or leave out punctuation. Very true. But one could argue they are retraining people in a round-a-bout way to write a certain way. Many people make a habit of doing certain things, and then carry it over into other parts of life, whether it is proper or not. |

Secretaries wrote in..."Short hand" decades before cell phones and Text were thought of. I see nothing wrong with short hand!!
That's my story.... and I'm stickin to it!! |

Yeah you're comp isn't broked then... 'tis hard having everything typed out perfectly on the phone, believe me I know. It'd take me 30mins to get out 2 sentences if I typed it in perfect grammar. The dumbest thing ever invented: auto-correct. It does not bother me seeing it on phones or even instant messages. But I see it on job applications, paperwork requests, personnel inquiries and other assorted places, and that is bothersome. Typing "How r u?" On a phone to me is fine. Having me read "My othr job sux...lol" on a job application is hair pulling. Yes, that happened today. Which is why I thought of it. |

Wow, in only 5 words, two great reasons to put the application right on the reject pile. |

I blame phones for this to. I see several resumes a day that do this sort of thing, and it always aggravates me. I can see doing it on the phone, I can see doing it on IM and even on some forums and such to some degree.. but not in any sort of professional papers, forms or writings. I tend to write out everything, and rarely abbreviate.
It isn't the phones, it's the people. Phones aren't forcing people to abbreviate or leave out punctuation. I can't even bring myself to short-hand on phones though. Then again I think I'm one of the very few. |

Does the way someone presents themselves online affect the way you think about them? This includes the way they write, spelling/grammar, if they take things very seriously/not seriously at all, get offended easily/offends others often just to name a few. What about the way someone presents themselves online is important to you? What doesn't matter to you? I do pay attention to spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Typos happen, but if someone is writing "I ame lukin 4 sum1 hu unerstns meeee n myy lief n m prbelms n hu luv dog's n zeebra's" then we are probably not going to have much to say to each other. |

I gotta laugh as I think about it...
I am actually quieter and more reserved here than in actual real life. (no schitt) Real life don't got moderators to spank me when I pop off a filthy joke, or bust out with my horrible kareoke/ man dancing like I do at work. I don't worry about being politically correct except here. In real life...I got the same personality that I show here...but alot more of it. I am far more vulgar and quick with my responses face to face. I gotta watch my step here or the delicate jungle orchids who need everything just right will get booty hurt and call a mod on me. Still, it has been good for me to have to play by Mingle rules. I figured out that a little self-restraint ain't that bad. (I am funnier in real life...taller too!) :) |
