I just got yelled at for saying that my friend's first step towards happiness isn't getting a job, but accepting the inherent empathy necessary to forgive himself and others for whatever he blames in his past for his present, and that he must seek inwardly as well as outwardly, balancing from where he seeks his validation. I explained that the malady is not his lifestyle but his thinking, and that since previous attempts at following the path suggested by this person have failed and launched him into self-destructive tailspins that there may be a deeper sadness fueling his emotional bondage towards stagnation. It was his mom.
