Sounds crazy, I realize, but I've been looking into this today there's quite a bit of info and videos on the internet and even a bunch of books written on the subject.

They claim that magic mushroom use (amanita muscaria) has ancient ties to all major religious inducing visions and spiritual experiences. They also say that many of the bizarre Christmas traditions most of us do without questioning them, also have ties to magic mushrooms, and originate in Siberia.

O Christmas Tree -
Amanita muscaria almost exclusively grows under pine trees. The red and white color of these magic mushrooms combined with the green of the pine tree, seem to be the color scheme of choice for Christmas decor. We place a pine tree in our home and place gifts underneath, where these mushrooms would grow and be picked.

Here Comes Santa Clause -
Siberian Shaman who often wore red and white, would gather the mushrooms in sacks. Since homes were completely snowed in during the Siberian winter solstice, the only way into someone's home was through a passage in the roof of a home.

Let's Not Forget the Flying Reindeer -
Siberian reindeer are known to be quite fond of eating these psychedelic mushrooms and prance about. The people would even collect their urine and consume it since most of the properties of the mushrooms that induce visions are not filtered out in urine but the harmful ones are.

There are a bunch more connections they bring up to make their case tying Christmas traditions to magic mushrooms but my post is long enough as it is. I was researching this today and thought I'd share. What do you guys think? I've never taken them BTW...

Here's a super looooong video, if you're really interested:
Just do a google search for "http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4410255898449014621#" For some reason when I link to it, it doesn't work

This explanation my be a bit outlandish to some of you. I find this kind of stuff interesting. Why do we do the things we do? What are the meanings and origins of these symbols and traditions? I tend to question everything.

I know Christmas is a mishmash of Pagan, Christian, and various other influences. The Yule celebration and winter solstice tie in as well. I've never heard this angle before so it intrigued me.

Do you question why you do the things you do? Have you ever looked into the origins of some of this stuff yourself or does any of that matter to you? ...it's just something you've done since childhood and fun for the kids.

Oh, and Merry Christmas!

Here's a video of Joe Rogan from Fear Factor talking about this topic. A much shorter video than the last I posted. At least watch this one.

Yea, Fear Factor's pretty awesome! Glad they brought it back after all these years. Joe Rogan's bad a$$ IMO. He has a lot to say if you look him up. Lots of YouTubes on his views. Even Mario has a thing for these shrooms. Makes him super

Like you said, a mishmash of several different things.

Magic mushrooms may have had something to do with it.

For me it's just a day I don't have to go to work.

And a chance to look at all the pretty lights.

Yea, that's the part that gets me. I don't think I could do it. Some of that **** is so far beyond gross, I almost puke just thinking about it

After studying it for a good part of yesterday, I do think these mushrooms are part of the Christmas celebration. I also think the lights and bringing a pine tree into your home symbolizes life in the time of year where darkness is at it's peak. Light/dark life/death good/evil

Yea, no need to leave the ground once you realize you and the universe are one. It's all in your mind
