I was just out in my son's garage..he keeps a radio out there playing constantly..usually hard rock music..drives me crazy!
Any hoo, I found the controls and started changing stations..Found one that was playing Elvis, back to back..brought back some memories I tell ya! I got to thinking about the day he died. Where I was and how people took his death. I had just gotten home from work and was cooking dinner. I lived in Lubbock at the time, most of the neighbors were my age, young married couples, some of us had children, some had just gotten married. There was a couple that lived 2 doors down from me and they were ALWAYS fighting! Any way, she burst through my back door, crying and very upset..all she could say was 'He's dead! he's dead!!" OMG..I thought she had killed him! When I finally got her calmed down enough to talk..she said it was Elvis who had died. Think of my relief! So what were you doing when he died? How did it effect you? |

In 1972 my best friend and I took a spur-of-the
-moment trip to Vegas, from San Francisco. First night we met 2 guys, one was an accountant at Ceasar's Palace. The other had been Bobby Kennedy's campaign Manager and was not over it. Anyway, they told us how to get into ANY Vegas show. They said, wait til nearly everyone is seated. Then, walk up to the guy taking tickets and have a $5 bill in your hand. Not $8, not $10, but a single $5. Just slip it to him, and he will seat you. !!! So, why not try for Elvis? Who had been sold out for years at the Hyatt I think it was. So we went around 8pm for the 8 o'clock show. HUGE long windy line of people, what? I asked the guy ahead of us why they were not seated yet. He said they were in line for the midnight show! We rapidly passed everybody to the head of the line. I had the $5 in my hand and slipped it to the guy. He took us in, seated us at the edge of the first tier, practically in Elvis' face. Best show in the world. The minute he would finish a song, everyone would jump up, clap furiously, then in a whoosh, they all sat down fast. Later it occurred to me, they did not wish, collectively, to miss a single note. He was a wee pudgy then. This did not affect his performance in any way. Goosebumps, fever, you name it, we got it from him. I had not been a fan until then. After an Elvis sighting, you were a fan for life. Short as it was. The power went from my legs when I heard the bad news. Some shocks stay with you. The King lives!!!! |

I was in Missoula Montana at my friends Patti's house, we were eating ramen noodles. Her dad walked in and told us Elvis died...
I remember it like it was yesterday. I was 17 years old and a huge Elvis fan, and still am. |

I don't know where I was or what I was doing.
I do have a hard time imagining what he would be like if he were still alive. He would be 2 days younger than my mother! |

Not that young, unfortunately. I remember Elvis.

Not that young, unfortunately. I remember Elvis. You know I never did like to watch him...but could listen to him all the time, back when I was young. |

Well I think his music will definitely have a lasting impression on American music. I find myself using some of his music in my lessons.

|
Yes, you're right. It will. Plus he was so popular back in a time when things were a lot better..you know..a really good time to be alive? That's one of the main things I think about when I remember his music..the times
