Yo Lex...I say we let em slug it out.

People need to stop being so sensitive and taking things too personally.

Thank-you for the explanation. Using a moderator or anyone else as a threat is something I would not do. I also don't like cyber bullies or bullies in the real world.

I don't think Misswright was invoking my moderator persona so much as she was referring to my (well-deserved) reputation for being a grammar/spelling/punctuation Nazi. She is a very sensible and rational person (hell of a sense of humor, too) and not someone I could honestly say I would ever even conceive of "bullying" anybody.

The main thing is to get the topic back on track so we can all complain about how the educational system is such a farce. (At least, that's the direction I'm hoping for....)

Thanks Lex. I appreciate the fact that you understand I would never intentionally bully someone, on here or in real life. I made a humorous observation (hence why I put the  after it!)and it got taken the wrong way apparently. I didn't mean to start a war! Don't kick me off...I just got back! tears

If only we were better educated, it wouldnt have to come to this. I blame the education system for dumbing us down.

Good to see you too Miss. Who woulda figured that a topic on gramattical correctness would devolve into a throwdown?

Hehehehehe How retarded is that?

Anyhoo, good to see you around again Honey. ....and yep, Soufie is an absolute doll.

I'm doing my best to rectify the situation.

I do have to agree that our education system has decreased dramatically. When I went to high school, you really had to work hard and produce an excellent assignment to get an A. I recently graduated from college and As are handed out for mediocre work at best. You can get a C just by handing SOMETHING in, no matter how poorly it's done. Trust me, I know first hand how the grading system works now in higher education.

Case in point: Took a psych exam. Did horrible on it...68 I think. I was devastated. The prof explained that it wasn't that bad...a C+ actually since the class average was 64. I looked at him like he was nuts. I said "I don't care what the class average is, I failed this exam. I want to know at least 80% of what I should know, and more often than not I'm in the high 90% range. A 68 might be acceptable to you but it falls well below my standards! How can I do better?"

He looked at me like I was nuts! Of course, I was the only 40 year old in class so that could explain it.

I like A's B's C's D's E's F's....any of them as long as it says cup after it, you made the grade.

This is exactly what I'm talking about. Why should it be so different here, especially when you're getting to know people by typing to them?

Here's how I see it: if I'm writing something that I want people to read -- and understand -- then it's in my best interests to make sure that whatever I write is as clear and comprehensible as possible.

Because, in the long run, I'm not doing myself any good if I toss out a bunch of incoherent, indecipherable drivel. And I'm not doing my potential readers any good either.

In a perfect world, everyone would care enough about the messages they're putting out there to take the time to ensure they were done properly. This is not a perfect world.

In fact, a significant percentage of what I see on the internet (not just on dating sites, but pretty much everywhere) is so garbled as to be a complete waste of time. I am not a cryptographer, and I have neither the time nor the inclination to try to decode the arcane babblings of those who struggle with third grade English.

I know that probably sounds elitist (it is, it's meant to be), but that's how I feel about it. If someone can't take the time to make themselves clear, it's not my job to compensate.

In my last post, I am not singling out the person I was replying to. I have just noticed that attitude from several people.

I got an email on another site and there was no punctuation whatsoever. It was several sentences together in one huge run on sentence. Very hard to read.

my education suffered for many a reason..I have spend the whole of my adult years trying to catch up...literally. I often don't see or hear my own or other's spelling or grammar errors as many others do...For this reason and because I am far from perfect...I tend to be quite patient and understanding (especially in an informal setting) about any short comings in how a message is delivered and try to "hear" what is being said...
even in a business setting..I have found a person can be quite knowledgable about their respective job and not be well spoken...but I will not loose respect for them because I recognize that I can learn something from them.
with that said...I do believe the era of everything being instantaneous, fast paced etc...we have certainly lost many qualities that used be held in higher regard....the well thought out written message...is one of them....the sitting down in each others presence and chatting face to face is another.
I have to remind my grand-daughter on occasion...that texting is not always appropriate because we loose the nuiances in the voice and body language which are essential to productively communicating..very important when dealing with sensitive topics, issues, concerns.

Why do you think it's less important? Or is it just people being lazy?

For some people it is laziness but unfortunitely a lot of it is due to poor education. It is disappointing to see how many people cannot spell even simple words correctly. They don't know the difference between "there" or "their" or "they're" for example.

In my opinion, men who continously misspell is a huge turn-off. A mistake or two is okay but when you need to go back to school it is another matter.

I also have wondered if it is poor education. I know University students I worked with about 3 years ago could not do basic math with pen and paper or could spell. I think they have depended technology so much that they don't know the basics of math or english.

I agree about the technology. Our country that was once a leader in many ways now ranks 28th in the world in education !!! That is way too far down the rankings :( We are becoming an entirely differnt country and I hate watching it all go downhill.

DIFFERENT !! That was a typo! I may be a bad typist but I'm not a bad speller :)

Ha Ha. Yep, we all do the typos from time to time. laugh

I think that blaming it on education is a cop out. As long as someone has education to blame, they don't have to try to fix the problem, right?

Had to think about this for a few minutes laugh

I *do* blame it on the education system... *however*...

I also *do* try to correct them, but not to the point where I'm constantly *nagging* them. They are (sort of) grown and left the nest, so it's more important to *be there* for them, than it is to be constantly harping on their short-comings. smile2

I'm not necessarily talking about nagging people. Or correcting them all the time. I just hear people blaming the education system for various things, yet never doing a thing about it.

And even people blame the education system for themselves not being smart enough. To me, that's just being lazy and not taking responsibility for themselves.

If the education system did fail, it certainly is not the fault of the teachers or the Board of Education; at least not here in Calgary. Fact is we have been laying off so many teachers that classes have grown on an average to 45 students. Lets add to that that the teachers here don't have any breaks between classes as they have been forced to take on more classes to cover those who were layed off; therefore no prep time or time to mark grades. This now will also impact them on taking some extra time for remedial work for kids that are struggling. I know at least a dozen teachers in my two bands and these folk are working from 6:00am to midnight and they can't put in the extra effort to help these kids. So, I don't think the Education system failed us here.

But once you noticed such a thing , the person should be corrected because may want to learn

they may want to learn but will they want to learn from you or care to have you point something out to them at that moment in time?....if you have concern for their well being, their future, have a rapport (yep had to use spell check on that) with them and can approach the subject with the proper amount of respect and sensitivity, go for it
but if you are just sick and tired of hearing poor grammar or slang or street talk and the feeling strikes you to correct someone out of that frustration, then it is better left alone.

i was just thinking about this the other day.
i don't understand why so many people are hesitant to blame teachers.
i just graduated from high school about two years ago,
and trust me,
a lottt of teachers flat out suck.
i wish they would ask students about their teachers.
my school was tiny.
my graduating class was about 110 students.
teachers at my school are proud because apparently they have one of the highest graduation rates in the state.
i'd like to know what most of my fellow classmates learned in high school though.
i don't know.
i just hated that damn school.
haha.

I know a lot of teachers around here who are in similar situations. They also work the long hours because they care about their students. Unfortunately, there will always be people who do not want to take responsibility for themselves, so they will always blame their teachers.

Were all of my teachers the absolute best? Of course not. But, I put the effort into actually learning so I could do well no matter what. Many don't want to do that.

Sure, there will be teachers that suck. We've all had those kind of teachers.

I had a programming teacher in college who said it was his job to teach, not help with the assignments. I could have just done what I could based on what he taught and suffered my way through class. Instead, I put the extra effort in and went to a tutor when I needed help on the assignments. I learned much more that way. So rather than blaming the teacher, I took responsibility for what I needed to learn.
