White Babies Now a Minority in US

The future is now: Nonwhite babies now outnumber white babies in the U.S., according to the latest census data.

Black, Hispanic, Asian and multiracial babies accounted for more than half of all children under age 2 in the U.S., the Associated Press reports via msn.com. Whites, by contrast, make up the bulk of older Americans, accounting for 80 percent of Americans age 65 and older, and 73 percent of people 45 to 64.

In another major demographic shift, the percentage of African-American households headed by unmarried women is greater than that of those headed by married heterosexual couples, a review of the census data also found.

The two-percentage-point difference (30 percent female-headed vs. 28 percent married couples) marked the first time that households headed by unmarried women outnumbered those of married couples among any racial or ethnic group since at least 1950, demographer William H. Frey of the Brookings Institution told the AP.

Demographers say the numbers provide the clearest confirmation yet of a changing social order, one in which racial and ethnic minorities will become the U.S. majority by midcentury.

"We're moving toward an acknowledgment that we're living in a different world than the 1950s, where married or two-parent heterosexual couples are now no longer the norm for a lot of kids, especially kids of color," said Laura Speer, coordinator of the Kids Count project for the Baltimore-based Annie E. Casey Foundation.

As the nation's adults get older and whiter while its youngest citizens get blacker and browner, it will be interesting to see how the dynamic plays out in the continuing debates over Medicare and public education.

Why wouldn't this be the case? There are lots of interracial relationships in the US and lots involving whites. Anytime anyone has a baby thats not 2 white people it goes into the "other" category so this is bound to happen.

Its not really interracial relationships leading to the minority status of whites. Interracial relationship rates are consistently low and havent really increased as much as people think they have. Remember, the census goes by SELF IDENTIFICATION. So those families who date interracially and have children can still choose to raise them to self identify as white. I Think the major factor to the minority status changing is the overwhelming increase in HISPANIC people. It will be HISPANICS who hold the majority spot that non hispanic whites have in the past. Whites will become A minority and blacks will remain A minority.

I am not saying it is the sole reason but it is 1 reason. And not just interracial but all minorities having kids is also non white. Not to mention statistically poor people have more kids and statistically a larger percentage of poor people are minorities.

all minorities having kids are not necessarily non white, because the census allows us to self identify. My daughter could decide to identify as white (theoretically) as she has blue eyes and blonde hair.

But there are many factors to the change in demographics, interracial relationships being one of the smallest.

my kids and grandkids will have the same ancestry regardless of what society decides to call them, as will everyone elses


if they come from US , that will be true regardless of what other ancestry they may also come from,,,

The last census reported that the group with the highest growth rate is those who classify themselves of mixed race.

There is nothing wrong with it either way.

I remember some professor predicting that by a certain year the human race will all be a light brown color.

It will put the tanning business out of business though..lol

And who might that be? Professor Sunshine?

really? what is the time frame they base that on, ,the last ten years? or are they basing it on the change in rate from last decade to this decade?

I ask , because if mixed race increased from five percent to ten percent that would be a one hundred percent increase

but if hispanics went from 20 percent to 30 percent, that would only be a fifty percent increase


although, 10 percent(30-20) is more than five percent (10-5)

IM not sure, because the globe is still very diverse in terms of climate so there will always be some type of disparity in skin tone, even if it becomes minimal.

This Is All making sense now...Explains why the Caucasian children have a higher IQ.

If I were Emperor of the world, I would forbid marriages within one's one race.
