So, you're sick and tired of being hassled by Transportation "Security" Administration (TSA) thugs, who fondle your "junk" and force 95-year-old grandmothers to take off their adult diapers?

Well, that's tough - because it's about to get worse.

Since 2006, the TSA has been developing a $1 billion program called "Screening Passengers by Observation Techniques" [.pdf] (SPOT) whose proponents - notably, one Rafi Ron, an Israeli airline security "expert" - claim it enables screeners to detect dangerous passengers via nonverbal signals, including facial expressions. The program is undergoing a test run, starting today [Tuesday] at Boston's Logan airport. So before you wrinkle your nose at that Epsilon-Minus Semi Moron rifling through your suitcase, please be aware that the "micro-expressions" you exhibit can and will be held against you.

As the TSA gropers assaulted Americans at airports, the outraged response of the public was taken up by some conservatives, who promptly declared that we need to organize our air safety campaign along Israeli lines - and now they've gotten their wish. Which just goes to underscore the old aphorism about being careful what you wish for.

Because what the Israelis do is pry and probe into every aspect of every airline passengers' life: questions about their politics as well as their itinerary, about personal issues - you name it. Indeed, every passenger aboard the El Al state-owned Israeli airline is subjected to an extensive interrogation, but it's hard to see how the relatively small-scale Israeli operation is going to be implemented in the US, which deals with multi-millions of airline passengers every day. The Boston Herald, however, gives us a preview:

"Under the SPOT program, as passengers hand over their boarding passes and identification, specially trained agents will ask three to four questions - from 'Where have you been?" to "Do you have a business card?" and "Where are you traveling?" - while looking for "micro expressions," such as lack of eye contact, that might hint at nefarious intent.

"Suspicious individuals will be pulled aside for more questioning, full-body scans and pat-downs. If the encounter escalates, agents will call in state police."

If your nor required to fly for business, then don't! When people stop allowing this to happen then and only then will it change. If you plan to go to Europe, take a cruise.

there is a lot to be said for body language and facial expression.
It can give away more than most realize...

True but these TSA agents aren't the brightest crayons in the box so I don't want any one of them watching my facial expressions because they don't really dictate how or what I'm feeling. It takes a certain kind of person who has that special "touch" to be able to read someone based on their face and most TSA people would be better suited greeting you at Walmart.

far from perfect...i agree, but the signs they pic up on could mean many different things, and unless they can read minds, they are just guessing at most....

Yes it can. It's how I can tell who will enter at store and steal and who I watch.

THey are going to be trained by Mossad Agents and I am sure it will only be to extremly qualified people.

Israel hasn't had a problem on planes in years..........

El Al is teeny tiny compared to U.S. airlines. I hope all this backfires and destroys the industry all together. Getting real tire of the government intruding in everything.

IF its not TSA, its customs. I guess its tricky to find the balance between over the top paranoid and unrealistically unquestioning

Better to be a little paranoid then have another 9/11.

But that's the entire point, they WANT us to be so scared we'll just give up every right we have without questioning, and by and large it has been working up to this point. They have us right where they want us. It's more a war on US than anything. There's a reason very little changes besides their invasions on our privacy getting worse and worse.

At what point is enough enough?

ABSOLUTELY!

THEY WANT US TO BE SCARED AND PARANOID.

But they want us to be scared of an enemy of their choosing. They want us to be scared and paranoid of everything, even our own government.

Not all government is corrupt. Real politicians are just people like us who want to improve our lives and society. As they get involved and gain any influence at all, they are approached and corrupted with bribes, threats, blackmail, etc. They become corrupt pawns of the greedy shadow government that rules with fear and money.

When you know how they operate, you can become a better judge of who you can trust. But for the most part, its probably not a good idea to trust anyone in any high position of power or rank.

You can know them by their deeds.

For politicians:

If anyone tries to bribe you or get you on the 'payroll' you should bear in mind that money is really pretty worthless. Its just paper. They will offer to buy your soul and your humanity. Its a contract with the Devil.

If you can't be bought you better not have any bad habits because they will set you up for black mail.

Failing that, they will threaten violence, threaten your family and business.

That is how they operate.

Profiling is one of the BEST tool's law enforcement has. It is extremly active and people are VERY telling. Especially their eyes. Why do you think professional poker players all wear sunglasses?

Have to agree with the right wingers and the Israelis here. First Israel has a better track record with security than many other countries and they are surrounded by enemies. If they can handle their own security there then their model will no doubt be of use to us

No one said if you can not look the TSA agent in the face then you are automatically a terrorist, but maybe you do deserve a deeper look. If you are shifty because you are nervous about flying or something it will come out in a short conversation or a pat down and X ray

If you are really someone up to no good, that will likely come out too. This system is a lot better than random searches where a little old lady from Minnesota gets a full body cavity search because her number was up

It really is flawed thinking to assume the obvious muslim in long robes with a big bushy beard is a terrorist too, if they are serious about killing people they will shave and adopt more western dress and clothes but they can not so easily dismiss signs of stress or worry as their plans and luggage are questioned

I would never think to give up my fourth amendment rights, but if I was being shifty or jittery in line at the airport that is what you call reasonable suspicion
