Hawaii, I will share with you some of the common "indicators" I have come across. Look for their English to be slightly off. Their syntax and grammar isn't right. If they want you to add them to your yahoo or hotmail IM in their first email. Here's a tip, if you are not sure, send them a reply email through this sight saying something about you won't give out your yahoo but would be more than happy to exchange emails here. If you hear from them again, be cautious. Usually, though, when they are told no about your regular email, they will disappear.

Grinning at Needs! Always the Teacher.

She is dead on though.

There are some new ones out on here. I've been getting lots of emails to IM or email them offline at yahoo. Profiles are very vague, too. I never hear back once I tell them that I don't email or IM off the site for a while.

Anyone gotten the red rose/cream rose email?

Make sure you have your spyware on and your virus software updated.

A scammer is someone who tries to win over your trust and emotions in order to take advantage of you. They will tell you how much they want to be with you, how much they love you, and how they can't live without you, usually by the second or third email, sometimes even the first. They usually supposedly live in the USA but are in Africa or the UK for either a work or family related reason. After they think they have won your trust they will pretend something has happened to them and will need you to send you money. My personal experiences were: A contractor working in the UK was paid only by an american check and the bank wouldn't cash it, needed money for an airplane ticket back to the US: Anothers mother was ill and getting poor care, again UK, needed money to bring his mother to the US for care; anothers daughter was in a car accident and needed money for health care; another was a contractor in Africa, didn't get paid for materials upfront, needed money to get by while doing job. I'm sure if I think about it I can come up with more that I have come across, they are everywhere. I am pretty sure I received an email from one of the today. If you pay attention to their wording usually you can figure them out almost immediately.

Scammers look for a hole in your defenses, then exploit it. Don't fall prey to "free" offers. If it sounds to good to be true, it almost certainly is. Don't give out an personal information: address, phone number, credit card numbers or other financial information, etc. Basically, don't say anything that might allow a scammer or other dishonest person to ferrit out any information they can use for their benefit and your detrement. There are tons of such poeple on the net, as elsewhere. But DO purchase and install good virus and spyware programs. Some are free, like AVS. You can find it with a websearch. Good luck!

I know mckeachie. Borders on paranoia, doesn't it. Unfortuately, it's the only way to guarantee your safety. Hawaiigirl in is Honolulu, by no means a scam free city. I've encoutered several would-be scammers there, not to mention pick pockets, thugs, and other underiables, all in person, not on the net. She also has children, and their safety should always come first. Be safe or be sorry. Right?

I would love to hear your story, I have one as well. Chatted with a scammer last year and he was good. Had me fooled which is hard to do. After chatting for weeks he told me he wanted a gold necklace. He asked me if I would buy him a necklace if he sent me money, I said sure. Next thing I knew I received 4 money orders for $700 each totalling $2800 all made out to me. He wanted me to cash them and wire the money back to him. OH HELL NO. He refused to take them back and had me rip them up. Have never talked to him since. I am sure those were either fake or stolen money orders.

Subject: RE: Hello Dear,
Body: When Hell freezes over, you learn how to speak proper english and copy and paste, you might just have a slight chance of finding some poor woman who is desperate enough to go for the drivel you just slung into my mailbox. **** YOU! You MUST be familiar with those words!!!!!! In fact I think I will copy this for future reference when your brother sends me the same email and I can paste this response back to him too. IDIOTS!

So this how I deal with scammers if I have the time. If I don't I just block them. If the guess your yahoo ID which most do for mine, they don't even bother with JSH and wont let me see thier profile and the one that did was decativated......Just my two cents.....just ditch them. They are easy to spot.

just because your spelling and grammar are poor doesn't mean you are a scammer.. some people on here might be from another country and aren't fluent in english or like me who hated english.. and spoke ebonics.. did you know that's a language? I didn't until the other day
