Topic: The Politics Of Golf Pt.3 | |

"My first concert was Deep Purple. Perfect Stranger's Tour. 85' or 86" I believe."
Gerald is telling us all about his first concert. "Loudest show I've EVER been to. They played "Highway Star" for, like...40 minutes. Me and my friend walked into the arena and got an instant contact high. The air was so thick, man." Gerald is making a pot smoking gesture as he re-tells his concert experience. "Well...I think the BEST concert I ever saw was Sonic Youth at The Trocadero in Philly back in 90' or 91'. Nothing else I've seen has topped that since." I light a cigarette and think back a little more before I add. "Maybe The John Spencer Blues Explosion show I saw was almost as good. They played their ***** off for, like...20 people or something." As I'm saying this...in walks Wayne. He's wearing golf shoes with no socks, green camoflage shorts, and an ancient T-Shirt from The Hog's Breath Saloon that accentuates his protruding beer belly. "What ya'll talkin' about?" he asks as he steps to the bar. "Concerts we've seen." I answer. "You know...the ones you'll never forget." "Oh...I've got a few of those" he says as he gestures to the bartender for a beer. "Skynyrd a few years back. That was hot." "Yea...but, like...that wasn't REALLY Skynyrd, man. It's just the surviving members and a bunch of hired dudes" "That doesn't matter when they bust into "Freebird" though, boy. That song is, like...my theme song. It's like the National Anthem or something...." "I look at Wayne with a puzzled expression but don't say anything cuz' I know he's totally serious about this. So...being sick of hearing about the Return Of The Living Lynyrd Skynyrd I decide to ask Wayne what his first concert was. "My first concert?" He takes a sip of beer and thinks for a second. "Billy Ocean. I saw him at Great Adventure sometime in the mid-80's when I was like 13 or 14 or something..." Everybody is laughing...but Wayne looks puzzled. "What? What's wrong with Billy Ocean? He was the jam. He dressed all Miami Vice...had that jheri curl thing goin'. Hot chicks in bikini's in his video's. Yea...he was hype. Remember that song "Carribean Queen?" Wayne immediately busts out a painfully high falsetto version of the chorus to "Carribean Queen". The bartender cringes visibly. " That song was the JAM!" I stare at Wayne completely incredulous as I take a sip of beer. I set down my mug and then say "You have absolutely NO substance, do ya'?" |

That was painful..... Billy Ocean was actually my first concert. I was at Hershey Park and he happened to be playing that day...... Then.....my first REAL concert was Deep Purple. I actually saw every band mentioned in this story....... |
