No Tom did ntmake whatever he looked at into a horcrux while interviewing with Dumbledore.

either dunbledroe or Slughorn (I forget which) explains that a horcrux is an artifact that is made at the time of a murder. Basically when you murder someone, you have the option of splitting your sould in half, and placing one half of the soul in an object (or living being? i.e. voldemorts sname nagini?).
Prior to zVoldemort it had been rumoured that only one or two people had ever succeeded in doing this more than once, and then never more than twice or thrice. When Tom riddle asks slughorn about the possibility of 7 horcruxes (hence 7 murders, 7 splittings of the soul) Slughorn realizes the mistake he has made in telling tom about the horcruxes in the first place.

Six murders, the seventh peice of his soul is already inside of Voldemort. That's the reason there are only six Horcrux.

I have thought about the numebrs as well withthe seventh piece being in voldemort. I think that is the most likely explanation for why dumbledore could not find the final one. however Ms. Rowling has been quite firma bout there being 7 various horcruxes prior to this, lol.

And no, he could not have murdered anyone prior. The way it was described, the horcrux, if it is to be made, has to be made AT THE TIME OF THE MURDER, not immediately after.

You know, I was thinking...We will know long before Harry and Snape face off again whether or not Snape truly loyal to the Dark Lord.

Think about it? If There are not Death Eaters waiting at every Horocrux, then it is because Snape did not tell the Dark Lord that Dumbledore and Harry have been looking for them. We know that he knows, I mean he had to mend Dumbledore after he found the ring.
