My uncle rescued a mastiff mix. He didn't like black people, people with hoods or hats, or anyone he didn't know, but if he knew you, he was the sweetest dog. He was being trained to fight and abused by a drug dealer, when they raided the house, my uncle got the dog. He was also one of the dumbest dogs I knew, but I loved him. He was afraid of sweepers and thunderstorms. It was just funny seeing this huge horse of a dog whimpering at the sound of thunder. He was a great guard dog though.

Well, with my uncles dog it was probably because the people that abused him before were black and he associated them with that.

I'm sure there's a logical reason why your dog barks at black people.

That's so weird ... because my dog doesn't like black people either. She's a midsized chihuahua/min pin; they are known to think they're 10 ft. tall and bulletproof. I rescued her a few years ago from a horse farm; the people were white. But if she sees a black person, she tries to go after them! shocked

We can all say racism is wrong, and it certainly is, but there's no telling how dogs see and perceive things with their own senses, and making human judgement calls for dogs isn't really fair. There's actually a lot of dogs and horses I know who don't like darker-skinned colors, and with dogs its a lot more common then people realize. Ditto with those that dislike hats. It's a change in visual features and dogs make strange to it, even those not abused. Our Mastiffs were never abused by people in hats, but they absolutely would not tolerate someone walking up in a hat. My dad's baby, Bear, freaked out when he came home after 6 months and he had grown a beard and mustache. She could tell by smell and sound that it was him, but the visual wasn't adding up (and my brother and I absolutely freaked since we were little). After dad shaved, Bear flung herself in his lap and he had to spend almost 2 hours settling her down, because she was sooooo happy to see her dad again.

Your so smart!!flowerforyou

It does totally make sense that dogs would judge people, by what they see, since they cant speak human english.

I have also known dogs, that dont like hats on people.(when my hair was really long, I use to pull it back into a baseball cap alot).

One of my good biker friends came over to visit me, and it was cold outside, and he took his helmet off, before he came in, but under it was wearing a black ski mask for warmth. My dog freaked out!! I thought she was gonna bite him, and shes NEVER BITTEN ANYONE ever before. She jumped up to his face with her teeth out, and did manage to scratch is face alittle. Its a good thing, he was a good friend, and knew my dog well, or that could have gotton really ugly. The minute he took off the mask, she instantly starting licking his hand.
Thats the only time my dog has ever been aggressive, but my friend felt it was his own fault, for not taking off the mask before he came in. I guess he knows dogs better than I do. I never would have thought that mask would make her do that. I always thought that dogs went my scent alone.
