Unless I feel the need to be on guard I look directly at a person and smile. A smile can do wonders at putting people at ease around you. Asking a question or just making a simple appropriate comment given the situation or place just opens the door. I like meeting new people. Smiles are the way to start. Would you want to meet and talk to someone who is scowling? (ha).
