MIAMI -- Clarence Clemons, the famous saxophonist of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, died Saturday after suffering a stroke last weekend, Rolling Stone reported.

The legendary musician was 69.

Known to friends and fans as "the Big Man," Clemons, who last performed with Springsteen in December last year, suffered a stroke at his Florida home on June 12.

During the week there were reports that Clemons' condition was improving, but both Rolling Stone and The Star-Ledger in New Jersey cited sources Saturday night saying he had died.

Clemons has had a history of medical problems over the last decade and was confined to a wheelchair for the past several years.

He played on two songs on Lady Gaga's most recent album "Born This Way" and performed with her on the season finale of "American Idol" this year.

Rolling Stone said he had been scheduled to perform the national anthem before Game 2 of the recent NBA Finals but pulled out because of a hand injury.
