Topic: Abbreviation Overkill | |
---|---|
I get that people love to abbreviate words. Some even say it's because they're easier to type that way (which I disagree with). But, when you shorten every word in a sentence, it's a bit much, don't you think?
An example of an email I received: "hi hw r u " |

Yea. It's just plain lazy. I can see abbreviating if you're texting.....just for convenience sake but....if you're at a keyboard and you're just too lazy to spell.....that's a crime.......

I don't even abbreviate when I text for the most part. But yes, that is a bit more understandable.

It's also less personal, ya' know? It kinda' show that you don't care enough to bother to spell correctly. It's kind of an insult.

I usually always abbreviate eceteria, etc because I hardly ever see it spelled out & it just seems the norm. I also abbreviate city & states. Other than that I don't abbreviate a lot but do sometimes find it annoying especially when reading a profile that shows lack of interest & lazyness when they use ur, 4 u, eceteria.

Yea. I have my own personal way of abbreviating....but it's usually to add character cuz' I try to write like I normally talk....

I anally retain all full words.
No abbreviations, faulty syntax or misspellings. If you don't count the odd typo. |

I am not talking about common abbreviations that most people use. |

But, when you shorten every word in a sentence, it's a bit much, don't you think? An example of an email I received: "hi hw r u " I have a question..."LTR" what the heck is that? I'm not fond of what I call "lazy" typing It all came about when texting became so popular. |

LTR = Long Term Relationship Ahhhh. Thanks! Thinking I must get up with the times. |

Agreed. I can't stand when people feel like they can't be bothered to show some kind of education. I am guilty of "text speak" myself from time to time but it is only with people I know. I have a friend who constantly makes up his own abbreviations and expects me to know what they mean!

Why only with people you know? What difference does it make?

As long as you can understand what they're talking about, no problemo.
On the other hand, if I chose to be pedantic about people who have a problem with those who choose to abbreviate, then what? |

Steven Tyler question: Why is the word abbreviation so long??? |
