For legendary tycoons, Donald Trump tops the list, but how many times has Donald Trump filed for bankruptcy? The 90’s recession wasn’t picky about who it affected. Donald Trump felt the pinch as well. His decision to use high interest bonds to finance the assembly of the Taj Mahal casino caused life to get very stressful for the tycoon.

In 1991, unable to pay a $3.5 billion loan, he declared business bankruptcy. He also came close to filing personal ruin. At the time, his personal debt was estimated to be around $900 million. Due to the bankruptcy, banks and bondholders lost millions. They came to a compromise with Donald Trump. The banks gave him lower interest rates and a longer time frame to repay the debt and Donald Trump gave the investors half the ownership of the Taj Mahal. In mere months the casino was back in business.

Not even a year later, Trump Plaza Hotel folded and Donald had to declare bankruptcy. Again, he worked out a deal where he’d give up 49 percent of the hotel to Citibank and the other lenders and he’d get more time to pay the loan back. It took him two years to repay most of his debt with many sacrifices. He had to give up the Trump Shuttle.

The bankruptcy saga didn’t stop there. In 2004, Donald filed for bankruptcy protection and restructured his debt. He reduced his ownership of Trump Hotels & Casino Resorts to 27 percent and gave bondholders stocks to help lower his debt and then stepped down as CEO. In 2005, things settled down and Trump Hotels & Casino Resorts came out of bankruptcy with a new name, Trump Entertainment Resort Holdings.

Unfortunately the reemergence didn’t last long. On February 17th 2009, Donald Trump filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy with a debt ratio of $50 million in assets to his $500 million in debt. This filing made the third bankruptcy for Trump Enterprises.

well he was successful for 12 years of that time (1992-2004)

its good that his financial status and connections give him a legal 'bailout' when things are getting too steep,,,

he has experience RUNNING a company and making money, which are two of a long list of assets for a president to have,,,

whether he has been SUCCESSFUL in those things is a matter of perception, Presidents represent a government which wears many hats
from accounting, to management, to security, to public relations,,,,

few will have experience in all the hats that have to be worn so they need the intelligence to know what they dont know and surround themself with the best candidates in those areas in which they dont have experience

I liked OBAMAS leadership style, his public relations style, and he seemed to have the intelligence to fill in the gaps where needed with the best of people, all while being very aware of national and international issues that needed to be addressed

the debates tell me alot about how knowledgable and 'presidential' the candidates are, I usually pay much more attention to those than the campaign and advertisements,,,

well, like i posted before, i want someone that at least has military experience... i don't like trump, never have... just because he is rich doesn't make him presidential material, and besides, the rich people are already in control and voting him into the president kinda seems like throwing gas on the fire...

I don't see how. Obama's got two degrees to Trump's one. Obama graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law School, was a constitutional law professor at University of Chicago, a three-time state senator, a U.S. Senator, and now, POTUS.

Trump, as far as I know, NEVER held public office, was CEO of what was essentially a gambing casino company that went bust and since has been more active as an entertainer on TV than anything else.

Personally, I think Trmup's chances at the Republican nomination are DOA. It's all a publicity stunt to burnish his image, which will help him to self-promote himself and media products.

It sure isn't going to do anything for the man in the street.

I see names but no information to prove your point. wonder if if they also declared bankruptcy?

That's the whole idea behind bankruptcy-- PROTECTION from one's creditors while one tries to extricate themselves from their financial follies or bad bets.

And each time Trump did this, people with whom he had CONTRACTUAL relationships LOST MILLIONS. Finally, they kicked him out the CEO's seat.

'You're FIRED' indeed! I guess they had enough, and the Three Strikes You're Out Rule finally knocked him out of the batter's box.

I dunno, it looks to me like he's now trying to wrangle out a political base on balls. Only explanation *I* can think of...
