So far, what I have listed isn't necessarily what I like, but rather to help others remember which songs they like. Lately I've been focusing one-hit wonders and flash-in-the-pans. Trivia Time: How many members of the Brat Pack can you remember without looking it up? (Hint: There are more than you think, but only 8 are considered "core" members.) |

As cheesy at it is at points, I always liked "Red Dawn".
"Say Anything" and "The Breakfast Club" are personal teen faves of mine too. "The Goonies" I never saw until this past year though. Now I'll reveal the names of the 8 core members of the Brat Pack. The original article which coined "The Brat Pack" listed over 20 names of rising young stars. Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald, Ally Sheedy, Anthony Michael Hall, Emilio Estevez, Demi Moore, Rob Lowe, and Andrew McCarthy. Others included on the list were: Robert Downey Jr., Mare Winningham, Tom Cruise, Matt Dillon, C. Thomas Howell, Ralph Macchio, Charlie Sheen, Kevin Bacon, Matthew Broderick, Jon Cryer, John Cusack, Jamie Gertz, Mary Stuart Masterson, Sean Penn, Lou Diamond Phillips, Kiefer Sutherland, and James Spader Melissa Gilbert was not a member, but she did hang out and party regularly with members of the Brat Pack. |

I had to bump this thread, just so I could find it again. LOL
Hmm....I still need to post a list of romantic 80s songs, don't I? In fact, Stefy just reminded me of one on Facebook. |

Okay...
Love Songs Of The 1980s The Rose - Bette Midler Longer - Dan Fogelberg Endless Love - Diana Ross & Lionel Ritchie Just The Two Of Us - Grover Washington Jr. Same Old Lang Syne - Dan Fogelberg (This is a personal fave about the rekindling of old emotions during a magical time of year.) Babe - Styx (This was the wedding song of a pair of friends of mine. They met when young before he went to Vietnam. They didn't marry until the '80s.) Always On My Mind - Willie Nelson (Another personal fave.) Open Arms - Journey Total Eclipse Of The Heart - Bonnie Tyler Baby Come To Me - Patti Austin & James Ingram Africa - Toto (A love song with with great imagery and allusions, it is still popular on radios of all formats today. Another personal fave.) Up Where We Belong - Joe Cocker & Jennifer Warnes Lady - Kenny Rogers We've Got Tonight - Kenny Rogers & Sheena Easton (Kenny Rogers during the early '80s was probably the premier singer/songwriter for popular love songs.) <Any song> - Air Supply (These guys wrote nothing but love songs, hence the title of the band. In my opinion, their songs were not as well composed as other artists.) Sexual Healing - Marvin Gaye (A sultry song by one of the best soul singers of the time period. The sound of this song was slightly ahead of its time.) Hello - Neil Diamond Hello - Lionel Ritchie Key Largo - Bertie Higgins (More of a break up song of reminiscence, it's still a personal fave - primarily because of it's references to Bogart and Bacall in the movie "Key Largo".) Straight From The Heart - Bryan Adams Heaven - Bryan Adams Tonight I Celebrate My Love - Peabo Bryson & Roberto Flack Against All Odds - Phil Collins Missing You - John Waite Almost Paradise - Mike Reno & Ann Wilson If Ever You're In My Arms Again - Peabo Bryson This list spans 1980 - 1984....there are many more love songs just in that five year span. Here I am trying to pick the best ones from those that finished in the annual top 100. Granted, you may have another from this time period that you think is better than some on this list. For instance, Luther Vandross, Isaac Hayes, and Barry White are three soul singers still around in the early 80s, and each sang some great romance songs. On the other end, Barbara Streisand was still mega-popular on the radio as well, with a few love songs of her own. My next list will be from 1985 - 1989, a period with some of the best love songs of the 80s (like that famous Bryan Adams song from "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves"). |

Two of my favorite albums. Love every song on both. Hooters - Nervous Night Frankie Goes to Hollywood - Welcome to the Pleasure Dome I always liked the song "Where Do The Children Go" off side B of Nervous Night. Of course, the big hit was "And We Danced". I still have a cassette lying around. |

Love Songs Part 2
I Want To Know What Love Is - Foreigner Crazy For You - Madonna Every Time You Go Away - Paul Young Saving All My Love For You - Whitney Houston One More Night - Phil Collins Sea Of Love - The Honeydrippers (A band put together by Robert Plant. I love this song every time I hear it.) You Give Good Love - Whitney Houston The Search Is Over - Survivor Missing You - Diana Ross What About Love - Heart Penny Lover - Lionel Ritchie (All of these are from the top 100 of 1985 alone, making it a very popular year for love songs. On my last list I made a mistake Heaven by Bryan Adams is from this year as well. Love songs became a big business in the second half of the 80s due to their success before 1985. As a result, love songs took many forms, from slow to upbeat, from R&B and Soul to Pop to Heavy Metal ballads.) That's What Friends Are For - Dionne Warwick & Stevie Wonder (Honestly, listening to this song, it works just as well for a couple as it does as a tribute to good friends.) I Miss You - Klymaxx Secret Lovers - Atlantic Starr Friends & Lovers - Gloria Loring & Carl Anderson (A rare #1 hit by a Soap actress, written for a couple on Days Of Our Lives.) Glory Of Love - Peter Cetera There'll Be Sad Songs - Billy Ocean Take My Breath Away - Berlin Sweet Love - Anita Baker With Or Without You - U2 At This Moment - Billy Vera and The Beaters Lady in Red - Chris DeBurgh (The preceding three songs are personal faves, and I love to sing along whenever I hear them.) (I've Had) The Time Of My Life - Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes The Next Time I Fall - Peter Cetera & Amy Grant (I Just) Died In Your Arms - Cutting Crew Somewhere Out There - Linda Ronstadt & James Ingram Nothing's Gonna Change My Love For You - Glenn Medeiros Ballerina Girl - Lionel Ritchie (This song was actually written for his daughter Nicole to express his emotions as a parent.) Heaven Is A Place On Earth - Belinda Carlisle Is This Love - Whitesnake I'll Always Love You - Taylor Dayne Every Rose Has It's Thorn - Poison If You Don't Know Me By Now - Simply Red Eternal Flame - The Bangles There are many more. Some popular love songs never made it to the top 100 for the year. In fact, a number of songs Michael Bolton, Whitney Houston, and Luther Vandross never broke onto list, though all three were immensely popular. Many country artists failed to reach the top 100 also. Dolly Parton's version of "I Will Always Love You" from the movie version of "The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas" in 1982 is regarded by many to be better than Whitney Houston's version based on the tear-jerking emotion Parton evokes rather than the belt-it-out version by Houston. Either way, it is a great song that deserves mention, even though Dolly Parton first wrote and recorded the song in the early 70s. After double-checking, "Everything I Do, I Do For You" by Bryan Adams was from the very early 90s, though it is by far his best known song. For a few more ideas, both MTV and VH1 compiled a list of top love songs from the 80s, which I was unable to find online. However, I did find this link which has a number of songs I excluded from my lists but which were also popular here in the US (despite the list being from the UK). http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/music/3671159/The-50-best-love-songs-of-the-80s.html |
