how about a dreidel, or the mexican version pirinola...

A dreidel is a four-sided spinning top with a Hebrew letter on each side. It is used during Hanukkah to play a popular children's game that involves spinning the dreidel and betting on which Hebrew letter will be showing when the dreidel stops spinning. Children usually play for a pot of gelt, which are chocolate coins covered in gold colored tin foil, but they can also play for candy, nuts, raisins – anything really!

How to Play the Dreidel Game

Any number of people can play the dreidel game. At the beginning of the game each player is given an equal number of gelt pieces or candy, usually 10-15.

At the beginning of each round, every player puts one piece into the center "pot." They then take turns spinning the dreidel, with the following meanings assigned to each of the Hebrew letters:

Nun means "nichts," which means "nothing" in Yiddish. If the dreidel lands with a nun facing up the spinner does nothing.
Gimmel means "ganz," which is Yiddish for "everything." If the dreidel lands with the gimmel facing up the spinner gets everything in the pot.
Hey means "halb," which means "half" in Yiddish. If the dreidel lands with a hey facing up the spinner gets half of the pot.
Shin means "shtel," which is Yiddish for "put in." Pey means "pay." If the dreidel lands with either a shin or a pey facing up the player adds a game piece to the pot.
If a player runs out of game pieces they are "out."

pirinola

La Pirinola is a very popular game that originated in Mexico. Many Mexicans play La Pirinola after Dia de los Muertos, which is the "Day of the Dead" festival. The traditional pirinolas were made of wood, but they are now made of plastic. A pirinola is like a small top with six sides. In English, the sides are take one (toma uno), take two (toma dos), take all (toma todo), put one (pon uno), put two(pon dos), and all put (todos ponen). This game consists of two or more players five years or older. Each player should begin with 10 chips.

Instructions

1
Each player must put two chips in the center, which is called "the pot." The first player then spins the pirinola.
2
Once the pirinola has stopped spinning, the player reads the instructions on top. The player must be told to put one or two coins in the pot, take one or two coins from the pot, take all, or "all put." "All put" means that each player must put two coins into the pot at the same time.
3
The next player spins the pirinola and follows the instructions in Step 2, and this continues as each of the players gets a turn.
4
When only one or two chips remain in the pot, each player must also put two coins in the pot all together at the same time.
5
Players who do not have enough coins to play must drop out. The winner is the last person left with coins.

This happened when my dad turned 40 forever ago.
They taped 40 pennies together, nickels, then dimes. I remember that they boxed up 40 quarters and wrapped them. 40 lottery tickets. 40 cans of beer. Everything was in some form of 40. It was wild to watch.

Have a poker game. Nickels, dimes, quarters. You can bump up to a quarter at a time and all players can bump. Can build a nice pot for the winner.

  OK,,your the only one besides him who would know THIS..WHAT DID HE ALWAYS WANT TO TRY,,or DO,,that as far as you know,,he never has yet?
Even if it was a KIDDIE THING,,like riding around that little pony ride???
ANYTHING COME TO MIND??
If it does,,DO THAT! It could be roller skating, a pinball machine,,to see a circus,,,JUST,,,something he may have mentioned that wouldn't cost much to have him NOW do...?
Did he ever do a piñata<---spell check,,where he was blind-folded and spun,,THAT would be embarrassing COOL..
It would forever remembered,,and WAS,,,,,lol,at one time MISSED!!!!

well men generally aren't quite as enthusiastic about party games...but one thing you could try - is to have a gift auction with money raised being HIS gift

and we have also had a scavenger - where the birthday boy can keep his gift or trade it for anything else found on the hunt by anyone else

he's 30? all the guests coucld give him $30
