DETROIT – A 63-year-old Southern California man who had explosives in his vehicle was arrested outside one of the nation's largest mosques in the Detroit suburb of Dearborn, authorities in Michigan said.

Dearborn police said Roger Stockham was arraigned Wednesday on one count of making a false report or threat of terrorism and one count of possessing explosives with an unlawful intent. Stockham had a large but undisclosed quantity of class-C fireworks including M-80s, which are outlawed in Michigan, Chief Ronald Haddad said.

"I was comfortable with the fact that we had taken him off the street — he isn't going anywhere," Haddad told The Associated Press Sunday afternoon. "I think the society he wanted to impact is safe."

Haddad said Stockham was arrested Monday evening without incident in the parking lot of Islamic Center of America, while a large group was gathered inside. He said police received a 911 call from a resident.

Haddad said authorities believe Stockham was acting alone but still take him "very seriously." He said Stockham has "a long history of anti-government activities," though he declined to elaborate.

Stockham remained jailed Sunday on a $500,000 bond. A preliminary examination is scheduled for Friday.

Police didn't know whether Stockham had an attorney. A public records search did not turn up a listed number for Stockham, though Haddad said he lives in Imperial Beach, near San Diego.

Dearborn, located about 10 miles west of Detroit, is the capital of the Detroit area's Arab-American community, which is one of the largest in the U.S.

I don't see how they can take a guy with a bunch of fireworks seriously, regardless of his intent. You could do more damage with a gallon of gasoline.

I once built a landmine using shotgun shells. I ended up destroying it but it worked very well when I did. So well it scared me out of the idea.

M80's can easily be manipulated to be far more destructive than intended. There's a few ways to do it too, I did it a lot for recreation...modifying fireworks is fun.

Your talking to a pyro, I know fireworks. What would most likely happen with these even if he had 50 and lit the bag is it would start a fire and cause minimal structural damage to adjacent wall or doorway. That being said he could attach timed fuses linking them together, light it and flush the whole lot down the toilet.

Try pulling the fuses, wrap the whole thing in det cord and shove it in a larger sealed container with abot a million nails.

Try gasoline mixed with a thickener like P-nut butter, add a few nails, put it all in an ammo can, attach a rubber band to the spoon on a smoke grenade, tape it to the inside of the ammo can and close the lid.

I like nitro, the smell of nitro, the instability of nitro, and the explosiveness of nitro. I just don't like the price Simple jr. college chemistry classes can you teach you far more than most realize unless your into it.

It's adorable that you guys are just showing yourselves to be MORE dangerous than the guy arrested. He hadn't made any bombs, he just had fireworks.

And we are talking Dearborn here! You have to watch the videos of the cops arresting Christians for talking to people about Jesus. It's the craziest thing, a guy has a shirt that says "Jesus is Lord" and some Muslims start talking to him and they talk for awhile and go their way and then him and his friends all get arrested. The whole thing was on video tape.
