compost piles
Whatever loose vegetation debris is around....pile it. add ashes, urine or fecal matter and pour a little water over it. let it sit for a while (a week or two) then turn it all over and mix it. add a little more water and all the while continue to add more waste materials. Repeat this for as long as you maintain the pile. Eventually it will decompose and the black soil like material which will form is a nutrient and ammonia rich composted fertilizer that will give outstanding results when tilled into planting soil. All required materials are free and it requires little effort to maintain. It does take a while for the materials to decompose to a useable state. (About a month before you will begin to get a useable yield) If you get occasional rains, then you dont even have to water it. Note: as the materials break down, it produces heat and the pile will steam making it look like it is smoking but that is just part of the process. Best of luck and much success. |

Manure Tea
Organic farmer here, and a tip I got from a very good hungarian friend was for this "freebie" Gather the crap. Horse, sheep, chicken, yak, whatever and put it in a barrel(s). Let it catch rainwater. It will form a concentrate, almost like a tea, thus the name. When your ready to feed your plants, dilute it 3 parts water to one part tea. They'll grow like crazy and it costs no more than your labor. Best nutrients around can be found in "shat" Good luck,,,,,now if I can just get my squash to grow bigger than a baseball |
