Never understood this guy. He seems so...bland at times. But then again, I don't know him personally. Just going by what I see on the screen.

I guess I'm so used to Johnny Depp when it comes to characters of this era. But the resemblance is quite remarkable, which is probably why he was picked for the role. I'll look forward to this movie. I love these old world settings.

I enjoy most of his stuff, especially his comedies from the 80's. Big fan of Grosse Pointe Blank.

If Depp was younger he would have been perfect in the role of John Moore(the narrator) of Caleb Carr's The Alienist which is set in the 1890's.

"It's sort of "Se7en" meets a series of Poe stories," he explains.

"It's set in 1850s Baltimore, and it's about creating Poe's version of 1850s Baltimore, him moving through it. So it has a lot of the Poe stories interwoven into it."

- James McTeigue(Director)

"The Raven

Nevermore will you say you haven’t seen what John Cusack looks like as legendary master of horror, Edgar Allen Poe. The High Fidelity actor is currently in Budapest shooting The Raven with director James McTeigue, who directed V for Vendetta. In the film, Poe goes on a search for a murderer who is mimicking crimes from his works.

The film also stars Alice Eve and Lucas Evans, reportedly as Poe’s finance and another detective.

We’ve written about The Raven before – when McTeigue came aboard as well as when Cusack was cast. Plus, we heard rumors that Jeremy Renner and Ewan McGregor were also up for the role. In addition to that, here’s a wrap up Russ did of all the info we have on the project.

* The Raven is a fictionalized account of the final five “mysterious” days of Edgar Allan Poe’s life. Apparently the famous writer joins the hunt for a serial killer whose murders are inspired by his stories.
* McTeigue describes it “like the poem, The Raven, itself, crossed with Se7en.”
* The screenplay is written by Hannah Shakespeare (who wrote the 2005 drama Loverboy, and was a story editor on Bionic Woman and Ghost Whisperer) and Ben Livingston.
* Machinist/Session 9 director Brad Anderson had been previously developing the project.
* The real death of Poe was also mysterious. The writer was discovered on the streets of Baltimore in great distress and in need of “immediate assistance.” He was wearing someone else’s clothes and repeating the name “Reynolds”. He died shortly after in hospital, never able to explain what had happened.

What do you think of the look of Cusack here? Seems pretty spot on to me. And I can’t be the only one looking forward to the actor taking on a more dramatic role as opposed to his recent ones in big budget blockbusters and quirky comedies, right?"

EAP was the Goth's Goth!

But turning him into a detective?

frustrated Whatevs!frustrated

This might be a worthy movie so I will not judge it but still, making a detective out of a writer?

Where is Hercule Poirot when you need him? Now that would have been a team up!

I'd rather Cusack. Depp seems to play these same type of characters over and over.

I love the cuzacks, I think he will do a great performance, and that photo you have up top, looks great. Frankly I am tired of Johnny Depp.He was all preppy, got an attitude about it, and went bi-polar. he is a great actor and all. . . but he is also not the only one. Robert Downey Jr. Is hot and probably would have also done an outstanding job. Johnny Dep needs to step out of his comfort zone and show some other skills. It's not necessarily talent when you play yourself film after film.

Holmes would make more sense if they were to team Poe up with anyone.
