Tell him you are willing to listen but you are in no position to help him with this problem and that he might need to speak with a professional.

Sounds to me like he's having a pity party. Tell him your uncomfortable in this situation because you don't know what to say and see how he responds to it. He may just want to ramble and not be looking for any answers.
