Museum, movie theater, bookstore, somewhere I can get to know the person relatively well, outdoor concert.

Go-Cart riding, Gun Range, Bowling, Play Darts, Pool, Lunch any place you can go to just talk or even a sporting event if they like them.... Make it fun and where one can relax and enjoy their time.....

but generally I'd say simple is good, and make it some place quiet enough to talk & get to know each other well enough to decide if u want date #2 - but public enough that u (or she) can leave if u want to - wihtout a lot of awkward explanations if it's not going well

^why I generally don't like arena events for a first - I wanna be able to get up and leave after a few minutes OR if I like him I want to talk not watch FB or whatever...

personally movie theater is a lame place to go the first date, you cant even talk at all. Walking in central park is always awesome. I like to do things outside the box on my first date, like kayaking or something both of you dont do that often, so you have a reason to laugh and just have a good time without being too serious. Also a sitting at a coffee shop is cool but if the convo runs stale it can be awkward, at least on a walk or something you can make up anything about the nice trees or ducks. . assuming you cant talk about yourselves for some reason.
