Administration claims 50,000 jobs created, but many projects were completed before funds were handed out

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration is crediting its anti-recession stimulus plan with creating up to 50,000 jobs on dozens of wind farms, even though many of those wind farms were built before the stimulus money began to flow or even before President Barack Obama was inaugurated.

Out of 70 major wind farms that received the $4.4 billion in federal energy grants through the stimulus program, public records show that 11, which received a total of $600 million, erected their wind towers during the Bush administration. And a total of 19 wind farms, which received $1.3 billion, were built before any of the stimulus money was distributed.

of those that RECEIVED energy grants, 19 were built BEFORE money was distributed(before grants were received)?


and why would they receive a grant if there was no work for the grant to go to

and if there was still work to be done, what is the point of mentioning that the farms were 'built'?

The lab's calculations were rough, early estimates based on limited information and do not take into account nonwind-energy jobs lost because of the program. But its economic model showed wind projects funded by the grant program created or retained more than 55,400 domestic jobs, most of them short-term.

If the project were entirely domestic, it would have created more than 87,000 jobs, the report said. However, this was not possible. The U.S. does not have the capability to manufacture enough wind turbines, it noted.

Another estimate based on research from the Renewable Energy Policy Project, which has been critical of how the Obama administration handled the stimulus grants, indicates the projects created a total of 35,000 jobs.'

It is actually much worse than that. Liberals blame Bush for ties with "Big Oil" so they do not mention the 5 billion dollar program Bush initiated to help get the US off foreign oil. The dept of energy grants were focused to boost several US universities to provide "state of the art" technology for the US to produce the next generation of solar cells and produce them here, as well as other forms of solar power.

Obama has already started shifting the "manufacturing rights" to China to "encourage" them to produce cleaner energy. This insane policy not only equals a US government subsidy to China's growth and prosperity, it simultaneously costs thousands of current and potential US jobs.

The US is aware of many projects where US companies built plants in China to make all the things we use to make here. The Chinese simply copied the design of the plants and built copies elsewhere and now sell our technology at a reduced price to anyone with money. This theft of tech and patents probably exceeds the value of the current debt of the US to China.

A wind industry trade group that's been critical of how Choma and others portray the issue confirmed that only three turbines were purchased outright from China. Not a single company that received these funds is owned by a Chinese company.

"When we talk about money going overseas, it's going to Europe," Choma said.

So while the green-energy grants did end up in the hands of foreign companies, the situation is far from what Scott's commercial claimed.

The $2 billion figure is old and incorrect. Even critics agree that money is staying in the country in the form of domestic construction and manufacturing jobs, though the amount is unclear and most jobs are short-term.

It's not possible for domestic manufacturers to produce all the wind turbines because they don't have enough capacity. And the overseas jobs in question are mostly in Europe, not China.

Gee, if you want a tax credit on a wind turbine, you can buy the popular "Hummer", made in China. They are making 20,000 turbines a year.
