Last time I took a vacation from work, I didn't show up again for almost three years.

It's harder to get out of a Mexican prison than you'd think!!!

I'm self-employed, so it's a little complicated. For the most part I CAN take whenever/however long off I want, but I don't just because I don't like my business being 'down'. I generally work 6-7 days/week (I take off when the Steelers play!
) and it's been years since I was away for more than 2-3 days. Even though, my customers still can always get a hold of me and with the exception of during a Steelers/Pens game, I NORMALLY always pick up 24/7! But, I see that as part of the responsibility. Next week I'm going to Vegas, but even then it's still a working vacation. It was an offer I couldn't refuse, but in a way been dreading it! Even when I worked for other people it wasn't much different. The last job I'd still show up on Saturdays when needed with no question just because I was needed and most of the time never even reported my hours. My boss had to beg me to take my vac/sick days (then again, the controller always yelled at me just to cash my paychecks!). So, it had nothing to do with money. I just take my work seriously. I remember the last time he 'begged' me to take sick days and I had to call the front desk every morning calling in 'sick'. Then every morning a sweet, lady in her late 70's would tell me she hopes I feel better. DOH! Man, that was tough! The years I was working for that company my normal 40+ hours/week I was still growing my own business and at one time was working 2 other part-time jobs (so I was still working during those 'sick days'). Even though time off can be nice, if you have a job you love you'll never work a day in your life. Besides for the fact that, IMO, the work ethic in this country just isn't what it used to be. Let alone, what it is in many other places like Asia. Then we wonder why China, Korea, Japan, etc owns most of the U.S.!

I was watching the news and they were talking about how many people don't take all the vacation time each year. I never understood this. Do you take a vacation each year? Do you use up all of your vacation time? In my company, we can only carry over one week, so I make sure to use up at least all the vacation I'd lose by the end of the year. If you don't, why? I didn't use mine. I would use the vacation days to go to the kids school and stuff like that. I took one one week vacation, in all the time I worked and I didn't enjoy it so I never took one again. I should have went out of town or something maybe then I would have enjoyed it. |

Normally I work during most of my vacation any time I take one... Why do you work during your vacation? I don't really have much of a choice.. I manage over 50-60% of the company and really can't be completely out of touch for that long.. I get 100-200 emails a day and if I let them go for a few days or even a week it'll be utter chaos... My name is Joy and I'm a workaholic..

I guess I'm lucky with the way my team works. We can normally take off when we want as long as not more than one other person is off during that time and as long as we get someone to be our backup in case of urgent issues.

I don't mind what I do, I enjoy my career... However, extremely competent staff would be a nice change...
