It's very real. However, mingle2 has been the best site I've seen without this problem as much. You should see Craigslist. You get floods of the creepys.

It also depends on how much you open up on this site. If people feel they know you better, they come at you in droves.

Haven't got one in a while on here. Though the other day I got a text from a number I didn't recognize asking my bra size. I used to get them like crazy (on other sites.) This one really is the best about it. Though I've noticed that if you state in your profile you are not looking for that sort of thing, you will get floods of messages about it.
