Okay ... I admit it ... I'm baffled. What's up with almost every profile these days looking like a promo for a travel agency or a wish fulfillment service ... ? I randomly pulled the following profile abstracts (not from Mingle) and the common thread running thru 'em is that of SPENDING MONEY and DISPLACEMENT ACTIVITIES. I enjoy a 'day trip' as much as anyone else, but 'foreign countries' these days is a bit put-offish - esp. with TSA's full-body scans (which they retain, btw) and the cost of 'getting there and back'. I'm quite happy keepin' my activities to more affordable venues and closer to home ... Your thoughts ... ? I kinda read this as people looking for someone to bankroll the lifestyle they'd LIKE to become accustomed to ...

I don't know, I have travel listed in my profile as well. I enjoy getting away every so often, though it's becoming less often all the time. Travel in itself doesn't always imply long distances. I have to travel to see Mom. She's only 300 miles away, but it requires plans. I sometimes have to take a "trip" to the grocery store, that's only 25 miles. Travel with a person can also be a bonding experience, you learn a lot about a person when confined in a small space on a road trip.

Just because it's a hobby I enjoy, doesn't mean it's a requirement either. I would assume someone who enjoys "dining out," also enjoys "eating in," I know I do. Just as I would assume someone who enjoys movies might enjoy watching them in the comfort of a home, just as much as in a theater.

I understand the "spending money" syndrome, and there are usually other clues to determine if that is a problem. "Travel" and "Shopping," doesn't exactly paint a picture of someone that understands that the money has to come from somewhere. However, someone who says they "want to travel Europe with a special someone" only implies a fantasy fulfilment. For example, I've never been to Hawaii, always thought I'd save that one until I was married (though I'm thinking I should have gone solo before air travel became what it is). It's not a requirement by any means, just something I wouldn't mind doing.

Of course when a person says "I enjoy skipping rocks across a still pond" as a fun thing to do, it might paint them as a little boring. That's why I removed it.

I think a love of travel is great, it shows an interest in things beyond ones own back yard, more likely to indicate an open mind or a broader life experience

what gets me is how many males list a LOVE for outdoor activities like hiking and canoeing or who LOVE the gym

My thought is that this is just another ubiquitous cliche that shows up in everybody's profile because everybody sees it in everybody else's profile and they all think it should be in there.

Like "laid back and easy going" or "I look great in jeans or the little black dress" or "long walks on the beach" or "I'm shy at first until I get to know you and then I open up" or "I like to go out or stay in" or "I am a single mother of three kids and they are my world."

You can test this out, too. 82.7% of all women list "sports" as an interest, but if you ask them a basic sports question, like "Who was the Cubs' shortstop in 1969?" almost none of them will know the answer.

They just think they're supposed to list "sports" as an interest because it will somehow make them more attractive to the profile viewers. Does it, though? I don't think so. Profiles that are nothing but strings of vapid cliches do nothing for me.

well, in all fairness, i like sports too, but i can't even remember who won the big games last year, much less a single player from 69..lol

Lex, you are right. I didn't have a clue what that answer was and I will be the first one to admit that I do not know the names of every player on our local sports teams

However, I do enjoy watching sports. Football and basketball the most but baseball is a close third. I raised 2 sons who were very much into these 3 sports so I have spent 20 years at fielda and courts. Not to mention if I wanted to watch TV in the living room on the weekends then odds were I was watching a game.

So although I am not an expert I do have basic understanding and can watch a game and have a conversation about a play.

Well, that's the difference. You put it in your profile because it really is an interest. In my experience, that's relatively rare. But then, you may be one of those people who uses a profile for more than a boilerplate carbon copy of the last 5000 profiles that they saw!

All I'm saying is that a lot of people don't put their "Interests" in "Interests" -- they put the same thing everybody else puts, applicability be damned.

I mean, you can tell when someone has put some thought into a profile. Especially since it's so obvious, because it doesn't read exactly the same as everybody else's!

If everybody who uses the self-description "I'm laid back and easy going" really meant it, the world would have ground down to a halt about 1998.

Well who wouldn't want to travel? Luckily I get to travel with my job enough to keep me happy so I don't list it in my profile. Although I damn sure wouldn't turn it down if someone wanted me to travel with them?

As far as my profile, everything I put in it is the real me and while I don't go into paragraphs of wants, likes and dislikes, you get the gist of me and if you want to know more (like that I love to travel) then you can e-mail me and it will most likely come out in conversation.

I happen to think my profile is a happy medium between those with little to no information and those that write a book!

I don't see what's wrong with liking to travel. A chance to get to go somewhere is always appealing. There's certainly nothing wrong with staying home, but really, the whole money issue is only an issue if you let it be. Really now, no one is going to have their money buried with them, are they? I'd rather spend and enjoy it, and have the memories that go with it, even if it is a splurge once a year.

If I can’t get to Costa Rica, Jamaica, or across the pond at least twice a year then I feel trapped; Vegas at least 4 or 5 times a year plus short weekend trips all the time.

My big trip is Turkey, Greece and Egypt next year for a month. I can’t wait! My last month-long sabbatical was Europe in 2004; Milan, Germany, Liverpool and Ireland.

The world is out there to see and since it won't come to me - I have to go there.

I pay for my own trips BTW. I have my own money. I only ask that my travel buddies pay their own way. If they can't afford to go, I will go alone.

Well when it comes to sports; I like the Canadian football and not only do I like the game but know stats of players; so in my profile I only mention football and wouldn't mention other sports. Travel; everyone loves to travel and as others have mentioned it can be simple as a 300 kilometer trip; not necessary half way accross the world.

I like to travel and I like to stay home. Both have appeal. Balance is key.

I love traveling, which is why I mention it in my profile. I'm always surprised by those who have an issue with that, or those who don't like to travel at all. I like to get out and explore new places and cultures. If there's a place I want to go, I'll go on my own if no one else is interested in going.

Why wouldn't anyone want to get away from home and explore somewhere they've never been?
